I have a 2008 Fleetwood Southwind with a W24 chassis and a six speed allison tranny. What part number spin-on filter do I need? What type of fluid do I need...TranSyn or Dexron III? Can I mix fluid types without a problem ?

Your Allison part# 29539579. Your W-24 come with TranSyn and to keep the extended change period stay with TranSyn, can find it at Allison, Chevrolet or GMC dealer. And tran temp's are lower with TranSyn!!!

Folks go through great expense to get rid of the Dexron for synthetic based transmission fluids.

Does the W22 chassis use the same filter? And where does one purchase Allison filters? Can I go to, say, a NAPA store or do I have to find an Allison shop somewhere?

Yes

Direct from an Allison shop check their website to locate a dealership

Yes, NAPA has a Gold type filter replacement for the Allison unit,

No

PS: You can pay twice as much and buy one from Chevrolet or GMC.

If you change your filter it is helpful to read the instructions that tell you not to discard the filter with the the magnet on it but to save the magnet for reuse - BEFORE you discard the filter and magnet and the trash truck picks up the trash.

Send a message via ICQ to Fred and Bonnie
Another helpful hint is to fill the new filter with fluid prior to installation, eliminates the worry of lost fluid.

Thanks to everyone for help with the spin-on filter topic. I have the filter and fluid being shipped to me from Allison. Filter less than $10 and fluid $30.
