Hello,
I got my transmission temp gauge installed, put a tee into the oil cooler line from the transmission to the cooler. What should be the temps with the sender install here, I run it for about 10 miles (in & out of town) and it looked like it leveled out around 190.

R Shomo, If you dowload the 2010 Motorhome Chassis Guide, you'll get this and more information.
TRANSMISSION FLUIDS
Automatic transmission fluid can provide up to 100,000 miles of service before oxidation occurs under normal operating temperatures of about 175 to 180 degrees F. Above normal operating temperatures, the oxidation rate doubles (useful life of the fluid is cut in half) with each 20 degree increase in temperature. Refer to the adjacent chart for petroleum base ATF.
Note:
The adjacent chart assumes that oil temperature remains constant for the miles indicated. Temperatures that appear for short periods, such as climbing hills, etc., would need to be averaged against normal operating temperatures to determine actual life expectancy.
OIL TEMPERATURE MEASURE AT CONVERTER OUTLET TO COOLER
350 degrees F is the maximum temperature. This is the normal place to install a temperature auge or signal. The temperature in this location will vary significantly with each vehicle startup or hill. If the temperature reaches 350 degrees F, reduce throttle. To lower the transmission temperature with the transmission in NEUTRAL, run the engine at 1,200 RPM for 2-3 minutes to cool the oil. DO NOT allow the converter outlet temperature to exceed 350 degrees F.
OIL TEMPERATURE MEASURED IN THE SUMP OR OIL PAN
• 150 degrees F – Minimum operating temperature for continuous operation.
• 180–200 degrees F – Proper oil level checking temperature
• 200 degrees F – Maximum oil level checking temperature.
• 285 degrees F – Maximum sump/oil pan temperature for short duration, such as a long hill climb.
• 300 degrees F – Metal parts inside transmission begin to warp and distort in varying degrees, seals melt rapidly and transmission fluid life is extremely short due to oxidation and distress.
TRANSMISSION FLUID – LIFE EXPECTANCY vs. TEMPERATURE DEGREES F MILES
175 100,000
195 50,000
212 25,000
235 12,000
255 6,000
275 3,000
295 1,500
315 750
335 325
355 160
375 80
390 40
415 Less then 30 Min.

Thanks Driver,
As always, you are a wealth of info and very helpful . So I guess 190 at the out to cooler sender location is a good temperture. I installed the Sender with the DieselManor Line Tee Manifold, easly install.

R Shomo, I believe the temperature that you are recording is from the sump to the cooler so.
"180–200 degrees F – Proper oil level checking temperature"
You run 190° in that cooler circuit and you are good to go! The temperatures in the chart are for mineral (dinousaur) based oil. You run Transynd and the performance of the fluid improves significantly and increases the performance and longevity of your transmission.

Driver,
I just changed the trans oil / spin on filter. Have 24,000 miles on the Allegro Bay and I put TranSydn oil back in (11qts). Should be good to go for a while now.

To maintain warranty: Allison has me changing the tranny filters at 12 mos and the filters and oil at 24 months regardless of mileage. The tranny has: TranSynd 295
It's that nuts to required a total tranny fluid change every 24 months regardless of mileage? Is the tranny oil that inferior?
Cummins warranty requires complete engine oil and filter change every 12 mos regardless of mileage and there is no schedule change for synthetic.
Changing both tranny oil and engine oil is expensive.

I'm sure you have Transynd transmission fluid so you really don't have to worry about the temperature. Allison told me as long as it is below 250 degrees the fluid will be fine.
My transmission calls for a filter change at 75,000 miles and a fluid change at 150,000 miles. But the time limit for changes is 48 months so I change the filters and fluid every four years.

My scan gauge shows normal cruise between 155 and 165 degrees. sometimes I might see 180 on a big hill.

What kind of rig are you running?

We have a 2003 Bounder 35E on a W22 chassis. Just had the UltraPower upgrade and GradeBrake done last week.
Front track bar, front & rear Hellwig anti-sway bars, Koni FSD shocks. Just had new Bridgestone 265/70-19.5 tires installed. 29,000 miles. Live near San Diego.

R Shomo-
My scan gauge shows 135-140F during normal, flat hwy, in May or Oct. OAT (outside air temperature) is about 60-70 degrees. In city traffic I've seen 155-160F. I am running with TransSyn 295.

Sorry. I forgot to say those temps are running through Arizona. Outside temps +/- 105. We visit our property in SE AZ near Sierra Vista.

On our Allison transmissions anything over 175° can be detrimental. Now on the other hand I expect the chart where I obtained that information is based on Dexron. Transynd, Torque Shift or other TES-295 fluids will allow you to run higher sustained temperatures however I do have a chart that depicts that at the moment so I can't speculate what temps on synthetic equiped trransmissions are detremental.
On the Allison website the 1000 Series Owners Manual (PDF) tells us that the Sump maximum, Intermittent is 250°F. I expect that if you are equipped with Transynd and you do achieve a 180° reading that you should be OK!

58bird; I am running the same trans temps on the scan gauge. I have changed the fluid over to synthetic (AMSOIL Torque-Drive). I just made a trip between Vegas and Reno and the high was 178. The outside temps were about the same. I also tow a heavy toad (Tahoe). Good Luck JP
