I have a 2007 Allegro Bay 34' MH w/ 8.1 lt engine and Allison 1000 Transmission. I would like to install a Trans Temp gauge to monitor the temperature. Is it nessessary on this Trans. and where do you install the sending unit?
Thanks for the Info
Richard S.

Yes, this was highly recommended to me by a high-level GM truck tech. He sold me a 21' Grady White sportfishing boat and I intended to tow it occasionally with my motorhome.

I think I remember him telling me there was a port for a sender on the side of the trans. Let me do a little research and see if I can locate it for you. A temp gauge is part of the instrument panel on my d-max, I can always peek under there and see how it's connected. Same trans.

Heat is the killer of all automatic transmissions, so you're way ahead of the game by being able to keep an eye on it.

Another avenue would be the ScanGuage II, not only will you pick-up the trans temp but a lot more.

Not on the Allison 6-speed it won't....Otherwise I would own a ScanGuage. It only reads the 5-speed Allisons for some reason.

Here's a trans temp gauge and sender, mounts in the drain plug hole on Allison 1000.

Here's a temp-sender mounting block for coolant line $19: http://www.ipttrans.com/inventory.cgi?action=descriptio...CScAabjwjD7D6OnL lztn

And the gauge to go with it, $59: http://www.ipttrans.com/inventory.cgi?action=descriptio...oyRrtpQIR5fHAZ1T Eq5I

Temps guages are pretty common for the diesel trucks. They have to buid the tranny's after they pump the motor up to 1200ft/lbs of torque, and race them. The Allison trans is only good for about 800ft/lbs in stock form. After that they blow pretty good.

Here's how they mount a manifold inline for a temp sender unit:

Here's their online catalog for them:
http://www.dieselmanor.com/dm_products/FTG-MFD.asp

They have quite a gauge selection too, just use the menu index on the left.

These are links from the diesel truck forum.

Here's the one I'm going to pickup just because it's so easy to install, and I don't need critical temp measuring:

Good price too, $29: http://www.dieselmanor.com/dm_products/DM-TRS.asp

Read about it at their online catalog. Measures about 5deg cooler at a 200deg reading compared to one in the pan or inline on a cooler line. I can live with that for the RV chassis.

Thanks for the heads-up, just stuck with an "old" model.

My X-Gauge function for TFT works great. I don't think my tranny got up above 153 degrees.

If your transmission never exceeds 175 degrees Fahrenheit, your can expect 100,000 mile before your next service.

You can see a Transmission Fluid Life chart on Page 68 in the Gas Motorhome Chassis Guide. This is a FREE on-line publication provided to us by Workhorse. Look for a link in the stickies at the top of this forum or go to workhorse.com & look for / Reference Materials.

Mine is quite low (about 140 degrees) most of the time. It hit 190 going over Towne pass into Death Valley on a 70 degree day. This is a long first gear climb.
