I keep gettting conflicting answers to how much fluid is drained when draining the pan on a 2005 Allison 1000. What is the correct amount? Is it 7.5 qts or 10.5?

Also, who would be the best place to find TES-295 fluid in stock in the Los Angeles area? I work near the airprt and would like to pick some up before the weekend.

Thanks,
Bruce

Babock,

Transynd comes in gallon jugs over the counter so I would say get 3 and you're covered with some as spare.

We are an Allison Lube Express dealer through Valley Power Systems and the closest I can see to you would be City of Industry. 626.333.1243

Hope this helps,

babock,

I changed the tranny fluid to all Transynd. It will take TWO change outs of 3 gals. each(measure drained fluid to make sure). Replace filter and clean magnetic washer per change.
Keith is right, Vally Power Systems in City of Industry (Allison area distributer)has most likely the best price in LA. I paid $30.88 a gal. + tax. You can get the Allison filters there also. Isn't it fun being a mechanic as a hobby.

BRUCE: I'm not sure there is a "correct" answer. Too many variables...you need to capture and measure how much actually came out of YOUR drain plug, then put back the same amount. If you are trying to accomplish a conversion to TranSynd from Dexron III, then it takes two drains and refills as jeepster47 said. Just take your time, measure carefully, and then do a final dip stick check after it is completely warmed up and running in neutral. ED

OK...thanks for the help on where to buy the ATF. I paid $32 plus tax at Valley Power Systems.

How long would you run between the two changes? I was going to wait and do the second change after around 5K miles or so.

I found mine to be at apx. 10 1/4 qts per drain. This put me just a little low and I was able to top it off after warming. What you might want to do is look at the stick when cold before draining and then fill to that mark when doing your change. Then top off when warmed up.

babock,
I changed the fluid & filter after some 500 miles between changes. Enough to mix the fluid in the tranny and torque converter.

The time that the rig sits unused may affect the level you see on a cold dip stick check due to drain back from the lines and TC. I know this from first hand experience.

First drain and flush, I took out 10.5± qts after rig sat for several days.

Second drain and flush I extracted more then 13 qts. That was after the rig sat for more then 3 weeks.

Had to go out and buy another gallon.

Total used between two changes in my case was 6 gallon minus about 3 pts.

Marty

I guess the good news is that I got a higher concentration of synth after said and done.

No one seems to relate the superior detergency of the synthetic over the dino oils. The first change-out to synthetic is considered to be a clean-out. There is a time element here; not mileage. It seems to me that if you want to remove varnish originating from the dino oil, you would want this to go out after you have given the first change-out the prescribed time in which to do it's job. What say you?

Quantity is contingent on how long you let it drain.

babock, don't waste your money. Change out the 1st fill of Transynd when Allison recommends an oil change with your prior oil (I assume Dexron). At a minimum I would run it 1 season, and then change the oil for a second time to Transynd. After the 2nd change you can go to the Transynd intervals which is 3-4 years, depending on which tranny you have (mine is 4 years for fluid on the Allison 3000, but 3 years for filters).

There are a couple of ways to verify the amount of fluid that it takes to do a pan drain on the Allison 1000 and 2000 products.

A. Call a Work Horse Facility or call Allison. They say the pan drain is 10.5 quarts.

B. Read your Allison "Operators Manual". Page 59 for the Trans. Fluid Capacity chart in my manual.
Standard Sump,
Initial Fill: 14 Liters, 14.8 Quarts
Refill: Drain 10 Liters, 10.6 Quarts

Shallow Sump
Initial Fill: 12 Liters, 12.7 Quarts
Refil: 7 Liters, 7.4 Quarts

Does not include external lines and cooler.

Tom says "contingent upon length of drain time" and I would add that time parked before draining is more to the point.I drained 14 Qt from my Allison 1000 and replaced a like amount and the dipstick "checks out".All this after being parked 3 months without starting the engine.Further,it is possible for the anal retentive contingent,to syphon a full quart from the oil pan after it has stopped dripping, since the drain is raised above the level of the bottom of the oil pan.I hope the rest of the transmission is better engineered than that.
