Another Brake Question

I just had the calipers replaced on my W22 chassied HR with 31,000 miles and did not require any other parts except for one right rear rotor that was cracked clear through to the center on one side. It cost me $340.00 to have the rotor replaced. My contention is that this heat crack must have been caused by a sticking caliper. It was the only damaged part in the braking system. My question for you experts is this: could this be caused by a sticking caliper or was this normal wear? If it was caused by a sticking caliper, how do I go about appealing this to Workhorse? The repair shop that I had the work done at told me that they sent a picture to Workhorse and they denied that it could have been done by a sticking caliper.

Thank you for your help, although I seldom post, I am an avid reader and have gleaned much information from this forum.

FWIW, I think WCC probably "should" have replaced the cracked rotor.

However, it appears they decided it may have cracked from a defect not covered by the caliper recall campaign. I say this because I believe you would have ALSO had a melted ABS sensor, and perhaps pad transfer, "if" heat from a stuck caliper caused the crack.

Since the dealer could not show proof of additional caliper related heat damage, they are not "obligated" to replace other brake parts, that perhaps "should" have been replaced under either warranty or "good will" policy. Just my opinion....Ed

Bill,
I also had my calipers replaced during the campaign at Tom Johnson in Marion NC and they told us that workhorse had sent reps down and they refused to to do anything except replace the calipers. We were also told that if the unit had over 30K miles they would have to flush the Brake system and that it would cost $165. Lucky we only have 11K and the system showed no evidence that the fluid having boiled or damaged to the rotors.

Bottom line was they were not and will not replace anything else... end of story.

I’d be finding me a different service center.

If it was a sticking caliper I think the heat generated would also have melted the ABS sensor as well as leaving deposits of brake pad on the rotor. Having said that I also think Workhorse should have replaced the rotor on their dime. Rotors should not just crack-thru.

Dennis:

I'm sorry you were apparently given such ERRONEOUS information at TJ-Marion. What they told you is simply NOT TRUE. There is NO requirement from WCC that an owner pay to have the fluid flushed, regardless of mileage, when having the recall completed. In fact, the NSD for WCC does not even promote "flushing", but he does recommend a fluid change, by bleeding each caliper, at least every two years regardless of mileage.

It is also NOT TRUE that WCC won't replace any other brake parts under the recall. However, there does need to be compelling evidence that the other parts were "collaterally damaged" by one or more hanging calipers. WCC dealers who can show evidence to their RSM to support the damaged components were ruined by a defective caliper have had good success getting WCC to pay for the additional parts and labor, in addition to the free calipers.

I'm particularily disturbed by your report about TJ-Marion because I've been telling lots of people what a great service experience I had when I went there, without an appointment, while passing thru the area in September. They fixed my basement A/C unit (under warranty) and were extreamely nice to me as a traveler in need.

I hope you will use the "rate this dealer" function on the WCC website to tell the NSD about your experience there.

Ed,
My wife and I were both treated with the same respect and courtesy that you were during our stay and their service center is the top of the line. However, I plan to call workhorse Monday to validate the info being passed by TJ-Marion because this info was also passed to another customer who was in front of us and when presented with their bill, the husband and wife both stated that they would never own another workhorse chassis.

Gentlemen

Thank you for the replies. I too would have thought that WCC should have replaced the rotor. I talked to the mechanic who did the work and his response was that Workhorse doesn't like to pay for things. My response was the same, I don't like to pay for things either. In the back of my mind, logic tells me that there indeed would have been other damage as well, had a rotor froze up. However I believe that second opinions are valuable and often keep us inline with reality.

By the way I had this work done at Jim Price Truck Center in Charlottesville VA and have no complaints with the quality of work.

Thanks
Bill
