Bad surge/ miss....Need wires and plugs?
2005 W22 w/9500 miles.
Started a 2 week trip to Florida and about 3 hours into the trip my RV
started surging/bucking/missing, going from a stop or low speed. Starting
up a hill from a stop seemed worse. If I let off the throttle and accelerated
again, sometimes that helped and sometimes the surging stopped.
RPM range was 2to3k and this only happens sometimes. Sometimes everything seemed to run just fine???? Once the stumbling stopped and
I was up to speed, 60-65, the RV seemed to run just fine and I was getting just over 7 MPG.
Heading to Gainesville FL Friday for a week and I am thinking about getting some Magnum wires and new plugs sent for me to install. I have 2 questions,
1) Seems like the stumble could be wires and/or plugs., but why
would it only happen some times?
2) Is changing the wires and plugs fairly easy to do by myself with
basic tools?
Thanks!
Russ

Sounds more like a fuel delivery issue to me?

Based on my experience with my 8.1 over the past 12 years and 80,000 miles I would change the wires / plugs and clean the MAF.
All those items will cause intermittent problems just as you are experiencing.
I have all my work done at the local Workhorse dealer so can't tell you how hard it is to change although a lot of guys on here do it themselves.
Are you getting a Check Engine Light?

I just went through very similar problems with my 2006 (2005 chassis) W24 with only 30K miles on it. It all started out with stuttering, shuddering, lose of power at take-off. When I was towing the TOAD it got worse. I did all the normal things a back-yard mechanic can do. Bought the high-end Magnum wires, new plugs, new MAF sensor, new fuel filter (very hard to do by the way), & new air filter. Turns out it most likely was a combination of the plugs and wires. But, one of my wires was very loose on the coil and that made the same kind of shuddering, lose of power, etc. Got replacement wire, installed, and it runs like knew.
Oh yeah...one of my catalytic converters was broken inside and I had them both replaced. Not sure, but that could have been adding to the problems I was experiencing. It was rather maddening to not get it on the first try...but perseverance finally won out (and the mighty dollar)!
Good luck.

HankyPanky...How much were the catalytic converters with labor?

Same issues here with stutter/miss/low power under load at higher rpms. Not sure which was the main culprit but Magnum wires and new spark plugs saved the day.
On our 03 Sunova, changing them is fairly easy from the top through the doghouse. I've read where others had better luck via the wheel wells.

Arch,
The catalytic converters (both of them) were $2600. That appeared to be a fair price from all the information I could gather. That doesn't include installation of course. That was additional.

Thanks for all the replies, I guess I will order plugs and Magnum wires
tomorrow and get then installed.
My issues seemed to only be in the 2-3k range in low gears. At highways
speeds it seems to run fine. My big concern was that the shuddering was
intermittent.
Thanks for all your help !

My initial guess is fuel related, like a fuel pump or dirty fuel filter. Please keep us posted on what the resolution is... plug wires are sure a lot cheaper than a fuel pump! -RT

If you have no records of a fuel filter change, I would go that route first. The harder the engine works, the more fuel it demands.

I'm in the change the fuel filter camp, if you get nothing else out of doing it consider it good preventative maintenance.

I got some Magnum wires and plugs to install and will get the
new fuel filter and adapter if I can find one here in FL. I hope to
get this done before I leave back to GA on Saturday. I will update the
results.
Thanks!

I've been through this twice now so have a feeling the plugs and wires will take care of the problem. With only 9500 miles, unless you got some bad fuel or excess condensation in the fuel, i have a feeling you don't need to mess with the fuel filter.

Couldn't find the correct filter here locally, so I will order it and install later.
Just curious if anyone checked codes with this issue? A local shop loaned
me his Matco scanner and it showed no codes at all ?? How can that be ?
