I have read where some owners have installed a secondary return spring on the brake bell crank to assist the full return of the brake pedal and brake calipier release.

I know that this may be just a band-aid fix and may not be efficient.

Also somewhere I saw photo of an installation.

What spring is used? If you know where the photo is, give us the link.

You ask and shell receive.

Because I haven't put in zerk fitting and had problems with brake pedel not operating the brake switch for CC, electric steps I install this stainless steel spring. Hooks on locking retainer clip and to far side lip of steering box iron.

I once employed a relay rod manual return spring on my 2001 Workhorse however since then and having installing a Zerk fitting the need for the spring is greatly diminished. The Bosch Hydro-Max has a very powerful return spring built into the unit.

To see if you have any problem with your relay rod, with the engine turned off grasp the relay rod with your hand and rotate it clockwise. You should immediately hear the electric emergency pump cut in.

Release the rod. Did the pump motor immediately cease making a hum when you released the rod? If so your relay rod is not sticking and as such a return spring is not necessary. A grease fitting on the relay rod will assure this performance going forward.

I saw these springs being installed quite liberally prior to 2004 however since the introduction of the Zerk fitting I have not seen or heard that a return spring installed on on the relay rod is the preferred device.

Prior to the grease fitting the correct maintenance procedure was........

"On chassis that were produced prior to June of 2004 this required removal of the pivoting shaft of the bell crank. The pivoting shaft is removed by unbolting the retainer on the top of the shaft, pull the shaft upward, clean grease and reinstall. On some body designs it does not allow for complete removal of the shaft before it hits the body of the coach. On these units pull shaft as high as possible until it hits the body. Fill cavity with grease while blocking the bottom to prevent grease from being totally pushed out, and work the shaft down into the grease until it comes out the bottom of the bell crank lever."

Zerk beats that procedure hands down.
