I have the UP and always use CC around here in the east and I sure do like the hum of those Workhorse duels exhausts reminds me of my Super 88 O's dropped back, in the 50's.

The OEM Workhorse mufflers are as quiet as a church mouse. Seriously quiet!

Try putting some SS Magnaflows on there! That will wake you up! The Magnaflows aren't nearly as restrictive as the OEM mufflers, as I cut up the OEM's to see inside and I am amazed at how many baffles and tubes are in those things. Before I cut them up, I looked in one end, and couldn't even see light from the other end. On the Magnaflows, you can actually look in one end, and see out the other. I believe the Magnaflows get rid of the engine heat faster, and causes my fan clutch to not engage as much.

I would not want to dispute your beliefs however I believe that the lowest common denominator that determines how much heat gets away from the engine depends mostly on the 1st point of contact, the exhaust headers.

Workhorse did provide an exhaust header solution back in the day with a package called "SSC" however to the best of my knowledge they retained the stock mufflers. The SSC features gauges, horn button, exhaust headers, rear track bar and his and her jackets. OEMs were reluctant to buy the SPID due to increased cost. Coachmen did produce a limited number of SSC powered motorhomes and I have seen those at the Tampa Supershow once. (but never again).

This only applies to me however, I like my motorhome to be performing and quiet. I do very much like my SSC horn button.

Yeah I remember when the SSC chassis came out. Where can I get headers to fit our chassis? Banks?

I noticed that reading elsewhere, changing out the Workhorse OEM mufflers to more free flowing mufflers can and do dissipate engine heat faster. One of irv2 sponsor's says that too. The OEM mufflers are restrictive as I was was shocked to see how much backflow restriction there was compared to these Magnaflows. I do believe that headers would dissipate the heat even more....that might be my next purchase.

PS. The Magnaflows don't sound like glass packs...they have a very nice big block rumble.

The original SSC headers were non-chromed (black) Banks headers. I did look under the fenders at the engine and confirmed that there were headers on there! Total jealousy! Dual 2 1/2" exhaust pipes don't hold much back pressure however that said aftermarket exhaust components show increased flow on a Dyno.

Banks is going to be the 1st to tell you that you should not expect much if any MPG increases using their headers or the whole Power Pack on the 8.1L engine. On the other hand IF I were a Rocky Mountain resident, I would have had them on there by now. Banks also includes their hi-flow performance muffler.

Heat comes off the engine like water comes off a duck!

Banks is the only way to go. I just replaced the headers and kept the orignal dual exhaust pipes and air intake.
The coach ran cooler under the hood, jumped from 60 - 80 mph. as the best improvement besides the Koni shocks.

JCM, Can you please expand on your comment about the 20 mph jump? Thanks

The "jump" ment that instead of dragging it's ass - it jumped (accelerated) from 60 to 80mph. Making it easier to pass or cruse at 80 mph all day (Northern Montana).
I believe the headers were about $2200.00 installed. Check with Brazills.

I would suggest that you change your expectations. The motor and powertrain are designed for durability. You can keep up with or pass the trucks as is. You don't need to cruise at 80. I have been all over the country including over the Rockies several times and I have a stock Workhorse W24. I am happy with its performance and would not spend money to make the rig use more gas and last less time.

Each to their own. Anything that cuts down my time need to pass, cuts down my under the hood heat and dosn't cut down my gas milage is worth it. You decide for yourself especially when your manifold bolts shear.
