It was suggested to me that I should go out to
BITOG and take a look at the subject of M1 oils
that are no longer 100% Pure Syn oil.
So I did..what a boar's nest!!
I slogged thru 16 pages of the "stuff"..
A few "facts" raised their heads:
All OTC oils periodically change formulas and
composition to meet new standards.
The Mobil 1 of today IS different from yesterday's product. (IMHO it is better)
PAO syn is a poor "carrier" of the newer additive packages, so some dino oil product
may be added to any syn oil, as a carrier.
Mobil 1 still reduces wear to nearly zero or
so small that it cannot even be checked.
So, I'll still waste my money and use 15W-50
Mobil 1, and enjoy awesome oil pressure, way
reduced heat from friction, extra cleaning power for clean internals, proven bearing cushioning, less CSK, and 3000-mile drain (and
M1 302 filter changes)..just like GM says...

Like many other Internet forums, I've seen some good information on the BITOG forum, but I've also seen blatant misinformation as well. Caveat emptor!

My 400 ISL is rated at 20,000 miles or 12 months for oil changes. I've switched over to Shell Rotella-T 5W-40 Synthetic motor oil instead of the traditional Rotella T 15W-450 dino oil.
Now there's nothing wrong with dino Rotella T. My engine will live to more miles than I will ever see put on it. But, I am a fan of synthetics and have seen many areas where they extend life, in both my construction equipment and personal vehicles. But the price for the synthetic Rotella T wasn't that much more than the dino so I went with it.
I'll still change oil once a year because I don't exceed 15K in any one year. But, in addition to the better lube values, higher heat capabilities, etc one of the biggest things for me is the cold temperature flow point. The synthetic Rotella is rated at 5W instead of 15W and when I do winter startups and exercise cycles that makes a big difference in initial lubrication. I also run the same thing in my Onan 10KW, which really benefits from the superior lubrication.
Can I justify the extra expense of the oil by better engine protection? Maybe, maybe not. It's slipperier and it "appears" like I've picked up 2/10 of a MPG in fuel economy but that's hard to determine on an engine that's fairly fresh (only 15K miles) and keeps getting better every trip.
I use Mobil One 10W-30 in my Jeeps ad I run lots of Mobil One 5W-40 (Delvac hd diesel oil in 55 gallon drums) in my equipment and have had great results. There is a differnce between the HD M-1 for trucks and the automotive version. The HD version is a higher detergent oil for HD applications. I don't know if I'd use it in a gasser. I don't know what the new truck/SUV M-1 is so I can't compare it.
One thing's for sure. Synthetic oil is always a topic that seems to bring out lots of debate.

This has got to be a first for IRV2.
A common gear head like me makes a common
post and THREE IRV2 Moderators post back!!
I have not seen that before...

In closing, I just wanted to offer that the recommended viscosity for the 8.1L engine is 5W-30 however I personally run 10W. I would not encourage anyone to run more than 30W in the 8.1L engine.
It is also my understanding that a 10W-30 viscosity package is more for the lack of a better description, "stable" than a 5W-30 due to the spread of the viscosity range.

Steady Eddie, your posts are informative and humorous with a relaxed lack of self importance. Keep up the good work.

Maybe I'm a minority of one, but I don't care for his posts. In fact, I will most likely give up on this forum due to the endless drivel he posts.

DriVer--
Two different cats here..on the one hand, you
have an 8.1L engine with fresh clearances, and
the new wave style oiling system--and on the
other hand, I have an old school 454 with the
old Vortec oiling system, and I have no real way
of knowing the oil change and use history of it.
Which viscosity to use in an engine you don't
really know? That is the question. The engine had
right at 50K miles on it when we bought it.
It had been run hard enough to "eat" an Allison
Transmission--something the Allison Techs could
not believe. So I tended to lean towards maybe
the engine oil had NEVER been changed..except
once, and I have the paperwork for that oil change, at about 5K miles. This next oil change will be the 4th. for the M1 Syn Oil..and I must say that the engine is quieter and has less CSK,
and the additive package is cleaning the internals because the drained oil is getting cleaner...
And, everyone, thanks for the kudos..
