My 2005 W-22 also has the power steering "howl or groul" at idle and low speed. I had the coach at a Workhorse service center earlier this year and was told by the tech that the noise was present on almost all Workhorse chasis. The tech said he had spoke to Workhorse directly and was told there is no problem, just a normal condition. The tech told me he belived Workhorse should look into the issue because he hears customers complaining several times each week.

On the handling issue, adding a rear trac bar makes a huge improvement. Cost is around $400 at Camping World.

Sal, What year motorhome do you have, that's always important to know?

The power steering's hydraulic system is also tied into the Bosch Hydro-Max power brake system however there shouldn't be any noise from the steering as your driving down the road.

Controlling a tail wagging the dog issue can be as simple as installing a track bar in between the differential housing and the chassis rail.

First of all you need to make sure that the front end alignment is true and that the tires are properly inflated. If a sway condition still presents a problem then you might want to consider a track bar. Several manufacturers make them now days and we even have a member here that has made his own.

I as well as many other owners on iRV2 use a Henderson track bar.

Check the lower radiator shroud for interference with the engine fan, sounds just like a power steering growl. Rick

Are you guys telling me that I just paid extra to get a Workhorse chassis that has 300 # less ccc than the exact same coach on the new Ford chassis and now may have to spend $400 to fix a problem that my old Ford chassis didn't have?

Check the steering high pressure hose!
I had a friend whose braded hose was resting
on the medal firewall, and causing a resonance
in the cab. Some cable ties and small pipe
insulation (at HOME DEPOT or LOWES) fixed the
problem.
My side to side sway was cured with the BILSTEINS, but my W-20 is 33ft. TENN.VOL.

Well Sal, lots of luck in trying the lemon law. I agree that the chassis and/or the coach oem need to fix this. All they need to do is add a Trac Bar to the rear axle and it would solve 90% 0f the problem. My DIY version cost me $70 RETAIL. Workhorse offers one along with headers and some other bells/whistles for about $3+k.

Sal,

Some people are not bothered by the sway, some are.Was your Ford completely stock as far as Chassis upgrades?I have customers with both Ford & Workhorse come in to have upgrades all the time.My suggestion would be to install Koni FSD shocks installed, these would help eliminate most of the side to side sway.I'm positive that the 8.1L engine runs circle's around the Ford V10 & the Allison transmission is light years above the Ford 4R100.

Sal, Are you telling us that the motorhome is "rolling" excessively or rocking back and forth while it's going down the road?

Glenn, The reason why the Ford has more CCC is because the frame weighs less. Make no mistake, there is no substitute for a great foundation. Workhorse's over-sized 50,000 psi rail gives you all the performance that you would expect to get in a rear diesel pusher but the benefit is that you get it as standard equipment on a gas rail when you buy a Workhorse.

As delivered from Workhorse the chassis doesn't need any 400.00 chassis fixes. New for 2006 is an SSC option that can afford an owner the option to pursue special equipment in a package that improves on the interior driver's station appearance, engine breathing and chassis performance. These enhancements are options and are not required.

New Workhorse gas powered motorhome ride and handle exceptionally well and it's not difficult to mirror this sentiment from numerous Workhorse owners. These new owners will offer much the same commentary and that is; "It's the best motorhome that I ever owned".

Sal, First things first.

Your situation is different that anyone else's so let's address the issues that are important to you.

First of all you need to make sure that the front end alignment is true and that the tires are properly inflated.

If a sway condition still presents a problem then you might want to consider a track bar. Several manufacturers make them now days and we even have a member here that has made his own.

I would also like to add that every one of these manufacturers that makes a track bar makes one for a Ford as well.

Not every one will need a track bar but they are solutions if all else fails.

The reasons as to why a motorhome excessively sways can be due to to frame loading, axle position and overhang length. There is nothing wrong with the chassis nor is any type of recall required or necessary.
