Brake Pads
Good morning guys,
I have some brake pad questions,
I'm thinking while the recall is being done I would have the pads replaced. New calipars, new pads, flush the fluid and start from new.
My service center quoted me $190 for front pads, I've never purchased brake pads for a motorhome however that seemed like a lot of money.
So my questions are,
#1...Is there better pricing out there ??
#2...Does the recall require Workhorse Pads ??
#3...66mm or 73mm, Does it matter ??
#4...What have you guys done on the brake pad matter ??
Thanks
Gregg

yes that is a lot of money, especially since it would only take few minutes to change the slipper and set in the new pads.

Yes, Shop around, call and ask other dealers. there are owners here walking alway with about $100.00 invoices for a set of pads.
The recall does not require pads .... "only" calipers. If you replace the pads they should use Workhorse supplied semi-metallic brake pads. They are good pads BTW.
Yes it matters. You want to use 66mm pads.
I only changed my rear pads and kept the front ones.

Recall in the morning.
MH is going for the recall tomorrow. I called Jimmy Johnson here in San Diego, and they had me in same week. Coach has 28k, rotors look great, no heat damage anywhere, annual fluid flush and brake inspections, cannot imagine it needs anything but the calipers. The tie rod boots are cracked, I think that is a good idea to have repaired, but otherwise, I have no plans to spend any money on the brakes. Anyone have a comment on what it should cost to replace the boots on the tie rods and the idler arm?
I do have one issue. I am getting a chirping noise from the engine on cold start-up (as cold as it gets here in San Diego). Once driven it stops, but I am wondering if a component is trying to give me advance warning. I am leaning toward alternator, but would appreciate any feedback if anyone else has experienced chirping.
Thanks,

John, thanks for the link, very reasonable price, I wonder if there is that much differance between the SEMI-METALLIC (STANDARD) and the premium ??
If the premium are that much better I think the $30 might be worth it.
DriVer,
Can you expand on this thickness subject,
Why do you reccomend the 66mm ??
Thanks Guys !!

I might be wrong since I personally have not attemted this however going on a limb, 73mm pads are thicker and I do not believe that they will fit on a 66mm caliper.
From the Bosch Manual:
Disc brake pads come in two sizes: thicker friction material pads for the 2x73mm and thinner friction material pads for the 2x66mm calipers. The steel backing plate is the same for both 2x73mm and 2x66mm pads.

One thing to consider, it could be belt noise. When you first start the motorhome it demands a lot from the battery. The alternator will put a heavy load on a cold belt until everything warms up and the battery gets charged back up.
