on my 2003 chassis with 16,00 mi. two manifold studs broke. i brought it to the dealer who made out of warranty repairs drilling out the old studs and replacing to the tune of $1030.00 I sent a letter to workhorse stating I thought this fell under the emmission warranty and they have agreed to pay me back in full. But I have to sign a letter stating I will not file a claim for the same in the future.I figure if this happened with so few miles this will happen again. Is there any class actions on this I heard this is a prevelant problem with this motor?

NASCAMP, This has been somewhat of a problem on the W-Chassis,
but nothing like on the old P-30 chassis.
On my p-30 I never powered down on a real hot day, such as
runnig the interstate on a 90plus day. I always let the engine
idle for about 5 min. to cool the manifold and let the cooling
system catch up wiht the heat.

On my W-20 chassis I had the ecm programed to turn the 12v. fans
on for 2 min. after engine shut down. The only problem I have is
with the W/H brakes. But I have alot of company!!!!TENN.

The exhaust manifold has to be able to "move" with heat against the head. The torque values are very low for the fasteners, and with factory robotics tightening the manifolds onto the heads, the torque values may have been too tight. That, combined with a bit of corrosion, allows for no movement. There are "special" washers used that must be purchased and used again when doing this repair. If your rig is out of the Factory Warranty, I humbly suggest a 180* F. thermostat. The 15* F. difference will eliminate a whole host of heat related problems, including heat caused spark retard and loss of power on grades, burnt spark plug wires, and etc.

I think this has not been a major issue on the W-chassis however, I expect the issue may be releated to the coach mfg's design as some run much hotter dog-house temps than others. This problem is also manifested in burned spark plug wires on some coachs and never on others.

Now if you want to talk broken studs and broken manifolds you need go no farther than the F53. Thr Ford 460 had major design issues which lead to broken studs and manifolds. I know from experence of which I speak.
