Since day one I have experienced a burning rubber smell coming from the engine compartment. This only seems to happen during hot weather. I have looked and sniffed but cannot find the source. Has anyone else experienced this smell?

I get this too, it smells like burning plastic, invariably it happens after coming down a grade. I pull over and cannot find a source, probably a wiring harness burning on the engine.

I would like to comment that I experienced a burning rubber smell last summer, and my first reaction was a belt. I looked at the belt as best I could, and finished the trip without any problem. About one month later we left for Yellowstone, and broke down about 200 mi from home. The belt exploded, and we lost all power steering, cooling, charging, and power brakes. It was replaced by the towing company (closest WH shop was 45 mi away). We finished the trip, but I continued to occasionaly smell that same burning rubber smell. So...I scheduled into a WH shop. They replaced the tensioner, and the belt again, and at least for now there hasn't been any more problems.

I thought belt too but I have been smelling it off and on for over 4 years. Also I have (as you did) looked closely at my belt and all looks well. Maybe I should pick up a spare.
