Can't Find Problem
OK I have a power loss problem. Won't do it at Workhorse shop or even one hour drive by shop. No codes. From research, if it is fuel pump, engine could eventually be ruined. So do I leave it at shop or drive till problem consistant or part fails completly or worse yet engine dies. Trying to build an as driven video with audio as proof but audio probably not adequate. Have orderd Elm 327 and software. Shop want's me to record fuel pressure. Still under wty so I don't expect much to happen till it dies or I spend money. Advice appreciated.

Please be advised that as far as I know you are not going to be able to read fuel pressure electronically. You need a fuel pressure gauge that screws into the fuel rail. I've been down this road before and it's what I had to do. A TechII is the only reliable instrument that will fully scan the ECM/PCM on Workhorse Chassis. Only GM or WCC service centers will have one. (most often)

just went thru an intermittent fuel pump failure fiasco this summer--in the end paid for the pump replacement out of pocket-extended warranty co has denied covg again, now they're claiming the fuel filter was clogged up when I had the issue show up, so I guess it magically "unclogged" when the inspector drove it at the shop!! what morons!! More than likely it will completely have to fail before they would have covered it, didn't want to take that chance...hope you have better luck than I did!!

Waiting for it to fail completely means driving an unreliable motorhome. NOT ACCEPTABLE!

Have done a little fuel pressure gauge studying. Need to know highest pressure and maybe more. Found one low cost test kit that was specific about not working on some GM products. Any ideas on how I should go about testing fuel pressure?
P,S. Just went back to re-read lit for the $20 elm327 analizer and software that I ordered. does say it will read fuel pressure, but then GM has wide range of products. Should have that in a week or or two.

You need to use a mechanically connected hose and gauge fuel pressure gauge. I would recommend against buying a Harbor Freight one for $20 because the one I bought could have incinerated my motorhome and cause me grave medical injuries. In use; the gauge filled up with gasoline and began to spew gasoline. the gauge that I finally wound up using was a component of a professional fuel pressure kit which was available at the AutoZone for a little under $200.00. Amazingly they allowed me to buy the kit, do my readings and then refunded my money. This was not an underhanded move since they suggested it.

My more than $20.00 SG XGauge does not read fuel pressure. I do not expect that you will be able to directly read via electronic means the fuel pressure on the 8.1L engine's ECM.
What needs to be observed as a working fuel pressure I understand is from 55 to 60 psi.

Autozone has a tooler loaner program, and what you did is how it works. You pay for the device, use it, take it back, and they refund your purchase price. From what they told me, it is for up to 90 days. Now, if you decide to keep the tool, you have already paid for it.

pkmesser, One of the times that I posted this information, I nearly had by rear handed to me on a silver platter. Definitely want to thank AutoZone for the program. I returned the kit in pristine condition after about 6 hours of use. The fuel pressure gauge was perfect and just about as professional of a guage (entire kit) as one could buy from Snap On or Mac.

DriVer, as a former fireman you could appreciate this. I have been using a 4 inch diameter, 0 - 200 psi American Gauge Co. gauge that came off an American LaFrance fire engine, for checking fuel pump pressures since the early seventys when EFI first came out. I haven't used it much since retirement, but did have the occassion to have it checked for accuracy by Snap-On about five years ago, and it was still dead on. I did manage to crack the real glass bezel somewhere along the way.
