Turn the ignition to on but don't start thr motor. Press the accelerator three times and release within 5 sec and turn the key to off...

This got me thinking? I can't ever remember reseting mine or seeing a message to change. 28,00 miles and I change every 3 to 5K. Is there also something else going on like an automatic reset? How often should the change message alert come on?

I have only had to reset mine once, when we were on our 5000 mi. maiden voyage from Calif to Georgia, back in 03. Actually I had just changed oil and filter myself, before heading home from Georgia. The message has never came up agian. Like you I always change 3000 mi or soon after. When the idiot light came on in the middle of Texas, it scared the crap out of me. I started thinking I had done something wrong, doing my own oil change service. I don't need an idiot light telling me what to do concerning basic maintaniance. 18000 mi trouble free except for a sticky brake pedal but thats another story...

Schoolsout2, You should not receive a light for an oil life monitor (OLM) reminder.

Just use the reset proceedure we've described and the TEXT message wll go away the next time you turn the key ON.

Do you PERSONALLY change the oil or does someone else do it.

If you go to a shop and at any time their technician is inside your car. He resets it. (or should) I had one that did not , which is how come I know how to do it.

Oh, What I was told.. Turn off, Turn on do not start, Stomp 3 times, turn off, start The time frame above was correct.

If it don't work do you click you shoes together and TOTO the dog appears?

Just thinking, when the lite comes on does anyone every think ,my gosh, I forgot to change my oil? Is the oil reminder necessary?

There isn't a light. The message is displayed in plain text. The OLM reminder is useful however if it is not reset at the time of the oil change, it might display at some point when the message is not valid.

As an owner and knowing that my oil was just changed, I would reset the OLM on my own just in case the shop failed to do so.

I personally change my own oil and know about the reset but have never thought about it in years and I don't ever recall doing the reset? But lately there's a lot that I don't recall. Is there a way to check for "engine oil life remaining" like in some other vehicles? Possibly can the change oil function be manually disabled by using the dash computer?

Send a message via AIM to Oemtech
IIRC - Hold down the mode button for more than 5 secs and you should enter the diagnostic menu. There should be an Engine Oil Life option.

Also a Scan Gauge II with an Xgauge will display it..
