Started draining the old transmission fluid three days ago after ordering Mobil Delvac that I learned from this site is an authorized replacement for Allison TES295 Transyn. Also read that if you let the MH set for a month you will get more fluid for the torque converter will slowly drain. Sooo I let MH set for a month, drained the fluid and changed out the filter and put the magnet on it after filling it with Delvac and put the plug back in. Every morning I go out and pull the plug and get around a cup of old fluid out of the trany--sooo it's slowing getting all the old fluid out. I'll let it drain until I get nothing when I pull the plug and then refill it with Mobil Delvac and let you all know how much i put back in to fill her up.

Woody, consider pulling the pan for those last several cups. The gasket is reusable.

Woody,

According to the best sources, the torque converter on the Allison will not drain. This is why you have to change the fluids twice.

[QUOTE=DriVer;919524]Woody,

After looking at used torque coverters yesterday I realized that there was no way that the fluid could drain out of it. So after I drive the rig for another year I'll change the fluid again then I should be OK and not have to drain every year--I'll continue to change the spin on filter yearly. I've also desided to change the pan internal filter. Called quite a few places and NAPA was the only one that had a filter available to replace it. O'Riley's had a back order so evidently they are in demand. Once I pick up the filter today I'll give the NAPA part number in this post and send it to OMY for his cross reference on his web site.

woodyk, According to our resident expert, "Mr. Transynd" in the Allison Transmission Forum, He suggests to drain and fill, drive around for a little while and repeat the process.

Now this is the best strategy since if you want to get TES-295 get it now and don't wait.

Now that said, the stuff is expensive and who has the time to do the change. Just see if you can get change #2 in the books sooner than a year. Changing filters annually on the Allison is something that I don't see an immediate benefit for since the transmission doesn't create any by products from its operation.

You will want to R&R the filter for change #2.

Here's the internal transmission filter that I got from NAPA--PN# 18663
The filter I removed PN# 29537966 and both have SAE A66-GF33% stamped on them.

Woodyk, Allison recommends that the internal filter be replaced when the transmission is being rebuilt. Not sure if you are talking about replacing the internal filter on the Allison or not.

Driver, since I pulled the pan I decided to go ahead and change the internal filter if there was a new one available and NAPA had one.

Woodyk, Interesting. I thought that there might be a few valve bodies or other modules in the sump that would have to be removed to get at the filter. This I would have thought would be related to the change on re-build notice. On GM transmissions it just sticks out in the open.

Driver,
The way that it was explained to me by a transmission tech, The internal filter picks up the fluid from the pan via the transmission pump so its filtered prior to go to the valve body-once it goes through the valve body, gears etc its then filtered again (spin on filter) proir to going back in the pan.

Driver,
Forgot to tell you that it does just plug into the bottom and sticks out into the pan to pick up the fluid. The big thing to remember is that when to pull the internal filter is to rotate in left and right with a slow downward force. Usually the rubber gasket/o'ring will stay in the housing. You will have to remove the o'ring, for the new filter will have one on it.
