Chassis A/C on 1993 Pace Arrow Fleetwood Coronado Chevy P-30

My Chassis A/C hasn't worked since I bought the RV (Spring 2015). Not a huge deal because I just run the generator and use roof A/C unit(s) while travelling. But I'm gradually whittling down the gremlins and this is on the list. All the parts seem to be there and the compressor is hooked up, but the clutch never engages and the blue light on the dash for the A/C button never comes on. It's the old (R-11?) type, so my gauge set doesn't fit, so I have no idea if there's Freon in it at the moment and the fittings seem to be on the back of the compressor and are kind of hard to get to. Not even sure which is high and which is low. I'm used to R-134 (built for dummies) fittings.

Should the dash light still come on even if Freon is low? If so, maybe it's just some kind of electrical issue (I just finished resolving a charging and aux start issue). Any thoughts on how to troubleshoot this. I haven't seen an R-11 gauge set in years and I'm hesitant to spring for a R-134 conversion kit not knowing what else I might need to invest in to fix this. As I said, it's not a critical issue, but it would be nice to figure it out and get it working.

Its R12, If it was me, and not having the gauges for R12, I would take it to a shop.

If there is R12 in the system they can recover it and reuse it, R12 is more expensive than R134.

Have them do a diagnostic on it, if its just low then I would have them add the R12 up to spec.

If there are issues, leaking evap etc.... I would consider re fitting it to 134

so you can do repairs in the future.

Yeah, I know that's the easy solution, but I'm guessing any shop is going to charge me $100 just to grace me with their presence, especially due to it being the old type of system. I'm hoping someone on here can point me to a few things to check before I start spending money on a "nice-to-have", but not critical system.
