Had the Bosch calipers replaced in January for recall. Ever since, the ABS light comes on (while stopped) and warning beep. Took back to Camper World to see if it was related to recall work. I was told that it was not related to recall work but traced to a faulty "ABS Switch" (coincidence?). Was also told that when the ABS light was on while driving, the brake lights do not work, which prompted me to go ahead with ordering switch (special order - $322 with diag & labor). Was I conned?

jacandjer: I can't comment about the "need" for the switch (not even sure what "switch" they are ordering)....but it sounds like you got some bad info about your brake lights not working just because the ABS light is lit on the dash. AFAIK, the dash idiot light ONLY means you don't have anti-lock brake function. Your brakes will still work, and I don't think there is any inter-connect between it and your brake lights.

Please report back as to exactly what "switch" was ordered. Ed

I hope you just didn't get a $322 Camping World education. It could very well be related to the brake recall if they removed the sensors during the swap over of the calipers.

Sadly, I strongly suspect that this is what happened. If they didn't R&R the sensors properly or didn't bother to clean the "hair" off of them before reinstalling them, this would very probably cause an ABS failure, which in no way would be related to the brake lights functioning or not.

Dumb question: did you actually check the brake lights before you signed the work order?

Thanks, folks, for the input.

I went back to Camping World today to talk to the service manager and was told he wasn't in (car breakdown in CA?). When I queried the service advisor, he said the diagnostic they ran indicated a faulty "Brake Switch". He informed me that this faulty switch would show as a Check ABS warning and the brake lights would also not work. I had checked my brake lights prior to departing on trips when hooked up to ION toad, but don't recall if ABS light was on at that time. All lights worked fine.

Will talk with service manager when he returns to work.

Ed,

Talked to Service Advisor and he said part ordered was a "Brake Switch" part # 22547838 (will try to find it online), and that these switches are a common problem.

Add me to the "after recall" abs light group. Seems to be a common problem after "the fix".
