Do you have a specific chassis and transmission you are asking about? Generically, I can say that with a gas engine transmission requires you to drive the motorhome some distance to make sure the transmission fluid is hot and parked on level ground to get a proper reading. After you have achieved a hot transmission, with the parking brake set, I put the transmission in park, then drive, then back a couple of times. Some manuals say to take a reading in park and I've seen some others that say neutral, but either way, take the reading with the engine running at idle speed. (I prefer having the transmission in park for safety reasons.) After letting the engine run for a couple of minutes more at idle speed, I then will check the dipstick twice.

Others can probably post a more precise method, but that's the basic process I use. -RT

Need more information. Make and model, diesel or gas for openers. Some use dipsticks some are done by other methods.

You definitely need to get it up to temperature. I looked for a level parking lot some distance away so I could leave the house, heat up the transmission, and then pull into the parking lot and check the level. Bring a funnel and fluid. I had just changed mine so I wanted to get it correct.

Part of my morning check-up prior to driving is to look at the transmission pan for any signs of leaking.

This is a funnel from autozone that will make adding fluid much easier.
