Chevy 3500 Brake Job
I was crawling under my (new to me) RV (2002 Chevy 3500, 8.1L, 25K miles) a few weeks ago and noticed weeping of fluid from the inside of the drivers side dual rear wheel hub.
I had the brakes inspected and they found the following:
Rear differential seal at wheel hub had leaked rear end oil all over the brake pads, hubs and wheel cylinders. Both front rotors were badly pitted and had 10% pad life. Pits were so deep they couldn't be turned.
Anyway, Front wheels - New premium rotors, pads and bearing repack with seals.
Rear Dual Wheels - New rear pads, wheel cylinders, new synthetic rear end grease, new brake fluid, repack wheel bearings.
This rear end has the fully lubed axle and required taking out both splined shafts for this work. About 8 labor hours.
Set my wallet back a-bit but I'm glad I found it and had it fixed before it failed as we're taking a winter trip soon.
The tip I learned is you have to drive the RV frequently (1/week if possible) and use the brakes to keep the rotors from rusting and pitting.
Just starting and running won't do it.
Too bad the previous owner didn't drive it a bit more frequently.
