when approaching a mountain grade going up does it make any difference to shut off the overdrive button until you reach the bottom on the other side? or it doesn't matter. i usually keep it on cruise control and let the computer do its thing.

I never use cruise control in the mountains going up or down hill. It does'nt know your in the mountains. It'll be slamming the downshifts, pinning the throttle, burning more gas, and upshifting when it should'nt and can be very unsafe going downhill in mountains.
It's programed for normal flat driving and has no brain at all for different circumstances.
You are the captain.

It makes no diffeence.. If the transmission is picking a gear, and for the most part staying in it, killing overdrive won't matter

If the think is shifting up and down and up an down, THEN kill over drive cause that will reduce wear on the shifters

joelyn,

The only way I drive on the hills and mountains is to use the tach and keep the RPMs up around 3,400 rpm and shift accordingly. Never use cruse control on grades.

I go along with Max's method. I prefer to control the transmission, keeping the RPM's in the 3K range.
