Can anyone tell me the number of square inches Workhorse recommends in front for cooling the 8.1? I'm going to build a air dam around the radiator and wondering if I have enough or if it might be OK to loose a few sq. in.

Here is some dated information that I obtained from the Body Builder's Manual.

Radiator baffling must be provided to prevent hot air recirculation from the radiator to
the inlet duct. The air inlet must be shielded from water and snow that may come from

the road, tires and through the grille.

To provide satisfactory engine cooling, the following conditions must be met:

· It is highly desirable that the cooling system intake area not be less than the

frontal area of the radiator. It is also highly desirable that the opening is
placed directly in front of the cooling system. If the vehicle grille area is not
directly in line with the radiator face, filler panels between the radiator and
grille must be used to direct the air through the radiator. Any area outside of a
45° angle from the edge of the radiator should not be considered as open
grille area, for cooling.

It was also included in the comments that a "Bug Screen" not be used.

Hey FT, Although I couldn't find the answer in my resources, I think the number you offered is pretty close!

The radiator measures about 20"x25" or about 500 square inches, I haven't measured the cut outs in the front as yet. The top opening is 4-6 inches below the radiator top and there is an assortment of things in front of it including the big air intake. The bottom openings look like they may keep the front axle cool. Thanks again for the info.
