I have had my 2003 MA in for 'adjustment' to the cruise control on 4 seperate occasions. It works for a trip or two and then quits again. Unless I want to constantly use upward pressure on the brake pedal, it is completely useless. My first new GM car, a '74 Buick had the same cruise control and guess what, it had the same problem.

I'm not mechanically inclined, but would try to do the adjusting if possible. Is there anything that can be done to fix this permanently?

I've had this happen before on GM products. Twice it was a bad module (black box) that had to be replaced (there were no adjustments possible). One other time it was a bad switch or pinched wire in the column.

However, in your case, it appears to be that the brake pedal cutout switch is prematurely tripping. Your cruise is dropping out because it thinks you are hitting the brake pedal. This switch can be adjusted so that you have to push the pedal down farther to disengage it. But, if this adjusting has been done before you may have a bad switch that is making intermittent contact.

Djohn,

Lubricate the vertical linkage between the brake peddle and the master cylinder. They have been known to get sticky. This will cause your brake peddle to not return fully and probably activating your brake lights (cruise control cutout). The shop probably doesn't know about this problem so they will never fix it.

I agree with "Full Timers" when we first bought our 04 we found our brake pedal was sticking and I had to pull up with my foot to release the pedal. Workhorse gladly serviced it, they removed the factory grease and re-applied a grease which was "better" for zero degree weather conditions. Note: my brake pedal only stuck in extremly cold weather
This fixed the pedal from sticking. My brake pedal linkage has vertical and horizontal rods into the master cylinder.
Good luck
