I have the Allison 1000 series transmission on my 03 Winnie Adventurer (WH Chassis W-22). I took it to the local Allison dealer for the required 25K transmission service, no flush, no torque converter drain, just the pan drain and the spin on filter replacement. I believe that the total amount of trans fluid required should be around 10 qts. I was charge $29.00 per gallon for 5 gallons of Transynd ATF. When I questioned the service manager, he claimed that my rig's transmission cooler system "vented"(?) and drained and that is what required the extra 2 1/2 gallons of Transynd. I can't find anywhere in my owners manual anything about capacity of the trans cooler system.

An additional note, I chose to have the dealer service the transmission becuase I do not have the time or place to perform a trans service myself. I wanted an Allison dealer to service the trans for extended warranty purposes. Prior to this service, the transmission was full to proper capacity on the dipstick (measured on level ground while hot) and has never had any leaks or needed any additional ATF added during the first 25K miles.

Any info on where to find the capacity information would be appreciated so I can put this to rest or challenge the dealer for a refund.

Thanks!

Best Regards!

I did my own. 10.5 Qts. Was your service man a Manure sales man at one time? Think he is still spreading it.

I don't believe that your transmission cooler can hold 2.5 gallons of fluid.

You might also call Workhorse Customer Service and explain what happened at the Allison shop and see if they have anything to say about your situation.

Driver,

As always, I can count on you to get me in touch with the right information. I owe you 2.5 gallons of your favorite liquid refreshment.

I'll keep you posted on the battle.

Best Regards!

OldSnipe: If they were converting you over to Transynd, don't they drain out your 10.5 qts of old stuff, replace with 2-1/2 gallons of transynd, and then repeat proceedure again to qualify you as 100% Transynd?? If this is correct that explains why you were charged for 5 gallons. BTW, the Transynd was priced a lot less than some have paid. Hope this info helps you with that "did I get taken" feeling! ED

I would have expected that Old Snipe would have had to pay for 5 gallons if they did a twice over change however this is not the reason given to him by the service writer.

Old Snipe needs to cut through the chaff on this issue!

I did the 1st change and I still have a 1/2 of a gallon remaining because the service center that changed the fluid did not drop the pan.

Dropping the pan and accomplishing 2 changes including filters should call for ~22 to 23~ quarts. How's my math?

Chris said to say Hi! BTW He was favorably impressed with you and that's rare!

Are you going to Branson? See you there!

TOM N : very SMART move on your part, and a pretty fair price, too! CONGRATS.

You might want to explain to our members HOW you were able to qualify for the warranty extension...doesn't it have to be done during the first year of ownership and at less than xx miles or something like that? Any other particulars you can share will be much appreciated. ED

Allsion told me it had to be done at the 5000 mile filter change and within the first year of ownership.

I had an appointment for Dec 30th but they could not get me in because of the holidays. They told me to stop on my way out of FL and they would take care of it.

The Allison Transmission center in Tampa, quoted me a price of $325 to drain, change the filter, fill with Transyn-synthetic. Needed to be done twice, total cost would be $650.00.

I did it myself, using Amsoil Torque Converter synthetic ATF--$26.60 a gal.

My local Detroit Diesel-Allison dealer in Springfield, MO quoted me a price of $650. Told me Allison doesn't approve of the power flush. I think I'll check elsewhere.
