Did I miss a zerk?

I have a new to me 2005 Safari Trek on a 2004 Workhorse W20 chassis. I downloaded the chassis guide and am using this to start maintenance.

Took my grease gun under the Trek today and gave three shots in each of the following zerks -
steering drag link, front (1)
steering drag link, rear (1)
driver side steering knuckles (2)
driver side tie rod end (1)
passenger side steering knuckles (2)
passenger side tie rod end (1)
universal joint at transmission (1)
universal joint center (1)
universal joint rear (1)
prop shaft (1)
bell crank (1)

Did I miss any?

Was I supposed to pack grease directly in the splines at the center u-joint or does that zerk handle it?

Do you have to pull the wheels to do the rear wheel bearings? If so, I can feel my checkbook coming out. Pulling the wheels on my 1Ton pickup is about as much weight as this old back can handle.

Thanks for the help. Hope to do all the maintenance that only requires common sense and patience. The heavy lifting is saved for young backs.

Morninghill, Short answer is "Yes." There are 14 fittings. 5 on the driveshaft, 5 on the right side looking, 3 on the left side and 1 on the relay rod.

Yes you need to pump grease into the spline shaft zerk fitting.

The rear and front wheel bearings are wet and require no user intervention. Just check the differential fluid level at the fill hole on a level surface.

Thanks for the guidance. Will go back tomorrow and search the drive shaft for the missed zerk. And check the differential while I'm there.

shoot a little grease into the zerk on the brake bellcrank under the hood if there is one.
if there is no zerk on the brake bellcrank, install one.
do a search and you will find lots of info including pictures.

I've gone back and forth on the drive shaft but only find 4 zerks. I found one at the u-joint at the transmission, the next is on the drive shaft just past the exposed splines and just before the next u-joint, the third is in the center u-joint, and the fourth is in the last u-joint, at the differential.

Number 5 is still a mystery. Any suggestions? Do I need new glasses?

I think (Hope) you gave me the answer. The chassis guide refers to lubing the parking brake clevis pin at this location and your description let me find this. Couldn't feel or see a zerk, so massaged grease into the clevis joint by hand.

Thanks much
Mike P

The Zerk fitting if it is still there, it may have fallen off who knows, is on the spline shaft socket. Look all around that location or turn the driveshaft over so you can see the top of it. This is where you need to lube the splines on the driveshaft. Aside from going round and round the shaft has the ability to also move in and out if only a fraction of an inch but those splines need to be lubricated. Take another look in the morning. Make sure you don't allow excess grease to build up on clevises because they will attract dirt and moisture.

I appreciate your patience. Starting at the transmission end of the driveshaft, there is a u-joint with a zerk. Moving to the back of that section of driveshaft, there are about three inches of exposed splines, then a second zerk. I assume this area from the exposed splines to the center u-joint is the spline shaft socket. Then there is the center u-joint and a third zerk. Then the second half of the drive shaft, then the third u-joint with the fourth zerk. Still can't figure where #5 would be. Am I wrong about the location of the spline shaft socket?

Honest, once I find #5 I won't lose it again. And I'm going back to clean up any excess grease from the parking brake clevis.

Driver,
Perhaps our short wheel base W20s have one fewer zerk on the drive shaft than the long wheel base W22s? I also have only been able to locate 4 on the drive shaft.

That's possible. I do have a Zerk on the spline shaft socket (1) and each universal joint (4).

Bingo! Only three universals on my W20. 178" wheelbase, two part drive shaft.

Thanks
