How do I temporarily disable my ABS for testing? Is there any harm in pulling the 60-amp ABS fuse under the hood?

Why would you want to do this? What are you testing?

FT, Yes that will disable the ABS. I believe that there is a procedure where if you step on the brake, and start the engine and hold it applied this may temporarily disable the ABS. I'm not at all sure on the later but we have had threads about temporarily disabling the ABS.

The easy way.. On GM systems (I do not know fords) is to stand on the brake when starting

ABS will read all it's sensors.. INCLUDING THE BRAKE SWITCH, and if it does not see 12vdc across that switch it will alarm (press TRIP to clear) and fault, and turn itself off.

Some other problems will vanish and the system will re-set but I've never had that happen.

I do have an intermittent ABS warning on this coach.. Last time I needed ABS... It was in fault mode.

Thankfully.. My tires are all properly inflated to load, evenly worn and the rig's balance is not far off what it was when it was weighed.

I came to one SCREECHING halt.. but it was a straight stop.

My test was a success. I pulled the 60 amp ABS fuse and drove it 180 miles today. Every stop was normal and smooth. The funny thing is that after pulling the fuse, the ABS light never came on. I would expect it to. It doesn’t even come on when I just turn the key on like the rest of the lights. I don’t know if it comes on when the key is turned on with the fuse in. Anyway, I am convinced now that the problem is in the ABS system. My next step is to pull all sensors, ohm the out, and clean everything. Hopefully that will fix it.

DriVer, you were right on when you suspected the ABS. I didn’t believe you until Jwatkins described the same problem (http://www.irv2.com/forums/f22/intersting-brake-issue-65756.html), “my brakes seem to release for a fraction of a second and then chatter and perhaps pull a little one way”. I totally spaced on the fact that my left front brake seemed to release causing the motorhome to pulled to the right. I was just focusing on the pulling and chattering part. The only thing that could cause it to release is the ABS.

OK since I have decided there is a problem with my ABS and it all started just after I had the rotors and pads replaced, I am going to attempt to remove the ABS sensors, ohm them, clean them, and reinstall them. The question is how do they come out? I tried twisting them and I tried pulling them straight out and they don’t seem to budge. I was gentle because I don’t want to break them.

Regarding the ABS light not coming on after you pull the fuse?

If you have a desktop computer and you pull the plug,, Do the lights come on? (No, since there is no power) the fault light can not com on if the computer that turns it on is unpluged.. This is why the light comes on when you start the coach, to tell you that the system has power.. and then goes off to say "OK"

Pulling the plug (fuse) means it never comes on, since there is no power to it.

Now,,, why would you want ot drive without ABS?

Page 2:

On my workhorse chassis someone OEM TEC posted the procedure of cleaning ABS sensors complete with pictures.. (Just above this post in fact) What I had always assumed was a devil of a job turns out to be easy as pie... Earlier this week I rolled under, and cleaned them

For the last "Quite a while" I have been getting "Check ABS" warnings

Well, the last trip, which involved several stops and starts at the beginning and one at the end,, I saw the ABS light come on every time I started the coach.. then it went off,, and stayed that way.. Not a single CHECK ABS annoying beep.

Turns out cleaning those sensors is very simple WOW. no wrenches needed.

Thank you OEM.. That was a very helpful post. Fixed the problem 100% it appears.

wa8yxm, the ABS light in fact does come on, and stays on with the fuse pulled in a normal operating system. The warning light does not get its power from the main ABS fuse. Ask me how I know.

Without getting into the whole ABS or no ABS argument, their can be several reasons why some choose not to run with ABS.
