I noticed today that while running my dash AC, the compressor stays engaged all the time. It never cycles off and on. I don’t know for sure but I don’t think it ever did cycle. It seems to work as well as expected for these AC units. I get 45 to 55 degrees out of it depending on the conditions.
Does yours cycle?

Your unit should cycle. I get 35 out of mine.
sounds to me like you are low on refrigerant.

Full-Timers, When my AC is on the "A/C" position, the compressor will cycle on and off. When the AC is on "MAX A/C" it just keeps on pumping non stop. When no AC position is selected the compressor cycles on and off I understand to keep things viable.

Thanks DriVer. I only run mine in MAX to recycle already cooled cabin air instead of heated engine compartment air. I will check it out in AC only next time I run it and see if it cycles. I understand the compressor will run in all modes except Vent, Flood and Off.

I have an 04 Tiffin Open Road on a W-22 chassis, I don't know the air conditioning make, but the compressor cycles in both the A/C and Max A/C positions. The max position serves only to close off the fresh air to the system, and utilize re-circulated air for the system.

laj, 35 degF is too cold and you may be the one low on refrigerant if that reading is on high fan and outside air. The air off the dash air should be in the 40 to 45 degF range.

well, i get between 35-38 in all my rigs. If it won`t blow that cold, something is wrong. Low freon, or something. If the freon is low, it won`t let the system obtain the setting of the thermostat. The reason for cycling is to keep from freezing up.

In regard to Workhorse dash air ... if you can measure 20° of difference between the outside air and the inside air coming from the registers you're doing just fine!
Dieselclacker is right; my AC does not stay in a perpetual rotor lock because it's in MAX AC. It does cycle on and off periodically but my perception is that the compressor runs more in the MAX position than the AC position.

I did a little research and found that the cycling depends on a few conditions. I was checking mine at idle in 90+ outside temperature. Under this condition it probably won’t cycle off.

DriVer, it seems like we have discussed these temperatures you mentioned before. Those numbers simply won't work. Eighty degree discharge air from a dash air will not do any good on a 100 degree day. I believe discharge air should be somewhere in the low forty degree range, depending on several factors. I believe maybe the goal would be to reach the 20 degree difference between the outside air and the inside air, and in order to do this, the volume of air discharged from the dash simply isn't there at 80 degree. If the discharge air from your system is only 20 degrees below outside air, something is wrong with your system.

FWIW, methinks that should be 20 degree differential between the dash vent output and the return air (from inside the coach) to re-supply the evaporator core and vent system, after at least 30 minutes of run time.
