If you decide you do need to remove fuel from tank, I'm wondering why you can't disconnect the line going to the motor at the filter and use the in tank pump.

Geez, that'd take forever to burn enough to make a difference. I'm not sure if they tried firing up the Gen or not when they started it the other day, I'll have to ask.
It's my understanding (I could be totally wrong about this) that the computer won't allow the fuel pump to operate unless there is oil pressure. So if the engines not running, the pump won't run, unless I power the pump some other way?!?!

I would get it running and put a couple cans of SEA FOAM in the fuel tank and take it for a long ride. If the genny starts, run that with the AC on for a load as well. Run the tank down as low as possible before filling with fresh fuel. Don't forget to check the tires also.

The generator will only run down to 1/4 tank, leaving the worst fuel still in the tank.

Once a year I add five cans of Seafoam to my tank just before filling up for a long trip.
During that trip I run the Onan 5500 at least an hour. Helps to keep things clean.
10 years now and Onan still running strong...has about 300 hours on it.

Thanks all. I'll run it with the Seafoam and see how it does.

Chevron Techron has a good reputation. You can buy it at any auto parts store. I would dump a few cans of this in the tank too. Or later, after the old fuel is gone.

Seafoam or Techron. Bring a spare fuel filter or two. Don't be gentle with the go pedal. Have AAA or whoever you use for roadside assistance on speed dial.
Drive it like you stole it.

It MAY not keep running for long without oil pressure, I really don't know, but I believe the engine has to have gas pressure from the pump to get started before the engine can make oil pressure. Lacking oil pressure MAY turn off the fuel pump after a period of time, again, I really don't know.

Just bought a box of six.

The reason I asked about Stabil is if used I would simply drive the tank down.

Thanks to all the advice here, that's the plan. And like 1bigmess said, I'm going to make sure I have a good roadside assistance (probably CoachNet) before I hit the road with it.
I did find a local tire shop that will mount and balance Cooper tires for $225 each. So with the fuel and tire situation being taken care I'm feeling better about the trip home
