This may be an old question but a number of us at a recen rally noticed that some units had duel exhaust with a pipe on each side of their rv. Other's (like me) have a duel exhaust system until it arrives at the back axle when the two pipes are connected to a larger singel pipe and directed over the axle to the rear of the left side.
Some rally members said perhaps there was a complaint about a hot exhaust on the right side of the rv. Another member thought it was a quick way to get the exhaust behing the tires instead of having the tires circulate all that exhaust air around the tire?
Any ideas?

The reason as to why there's a 2 in to 1 tail pipe is because the coach builder designer wants it that way.
The prevailing principal behind the aft exiting tail pipe is that it takes it vents the exhaust behind the rear axle and I believe that we'll probably see more of these types of exhaust setups in the future. Winnebago for instance has a 2 into 1 tail pipe on some Itasca models.
If you look at some aftermarket track bars they are already bent to accommodate the over axle tail pipe.

DriVer,
Thanks. I knew you would have the answer. The additional question, of course, is whether we have lost even a smallest piece of power by going back to a single exhaust?

In fire fighting they always teach make 1 big hole instead of 2 small ones. Roughly same principal. The 3" pipes are over sized as it is.

I also have a 2005 Suncruiser 38R. Build date of 12/2004. I have duel 3" exhaust exiting in front of each rear dual.
The only 38' coach on the Workhorse chassis that I know of that combines the exhaust and exits as one pipe on the dirvers side is the 2006 38T. The exhaust pipe is 4". I'm guessing the one pipe on the drivers side has something to do with the very long rear bedroom/living room passenger slide on the 38T.
The 38R also has a large bedroom passenger side slide but mine exits normally in front of each rear dual. If your 2005 38R has a single 4" exhaust on the dirvers side there is a possiblity it was a change made late in the model year, possibly because of the long bedroom slide on the 38R.
Now that you mention this I'm going to be extremely careful when exercising my 8.1 while parked with the rear slide out. I have idled the engine with the slides out and haven't had the CO alarm go off but I'm still going to be cautious.
Please post if you find out why your 30R as a single exhaust. Maybe you should phone Winnebago.

Yes, I have 3 inch with two mufflers and converters till I get to the axle. Instead of exiting out they turn together and enter a 4 inch pipe tha goes over the axle and out behind the left wheel.
I think the construction date was August 04. It sure makes it clear to turn off the engine at the dump station or you'll have your head inside the 4 inch pipe.
All I wanted was a chrome exhaust pipe. Now I need to find a 4 with one.

The biggest advantage to the dual exhausts is when ya really get on it, the dual outputs helps keep you centered in the lane...

Hey Tom. Now I have another question? I thought only the diesel should have a turn down? Not for gas model?
JB, you are funny!!

I followed my buddy and he was in his new Horizon with 400 Cummins. His exhaust kicked up so much dust on a gravel road that I had to hang way back.
If you put an exhaust extension on your rear exiting single exhaust I suggest turn the outlet to the side. If you don't the dust you kick up will make a mess of the back of your coach.
Tom

PPS: Turn off you basement air when entering a campground. Couple a downpipe and a basement air unit, you could grow potatoes on the hood of the toad.
The SSC option features chrome tips. They are cut at an angle and the exthaust stream is directed straight out of the nozzle. The tips look good and they don't kick up dust.
