If I were you, I would call Jon Brazel in Centralia, WA. He is an IRV2 sponsor and does reprogramming of ECM's as well as being a authorized Workhorse Servicecenter. They can advise as to removing the ECM and sending it. Also, I believe that Oemy's website may offer instructions in removing the ECM.

Send a message via AIM to oemtech
No you do not have to take it to the dealer. But, you will need the part number off the unit and it will have to be programmed with your vin code. Here is a link to a How To R &R your ECM.

Call Brazel's RV and they should be able to fix you up with a programmed ECM.

Who told you you need a new ECM? Does the diagnosis support the trouble that you are having?

Would like to hear his diagnosis and what leads him to believe the ECM is the culprit.

We are here to help you guys, if you can provide us with details we may be able to save you some money and get you fixed quicker!

Which leads to this question; What type of scanner? There is only one type of scanner than could make the determination that your ECM might need replacing. In the end, a certified workhorse technician would to the best guy to make that call using the appropriate scanner.

Be aware that the scanner gives a code which INDICATES where the problem MIGHT be. It does not always tell you exactly where the problem is.

Many technicians today (They call them that now) use the "Shotgun" approach. Plug in the scanner.. Replace whatever it says is bad.. IF it don't run plug it in again and replace the new item per code.

A "Bad ECM" might be nothing more than a disconnected wire.

My car... When I had one.. Suddenly the engine sputtered and coughed and the CHECK light came on.. Reading the code and calling Mr. Fixit he said "Emmissions controls" (Just the problem you have) I hooked the vacuum hose back up and away I drove.
