I just read on the forum today about someone reprogramming their chip to run the fans after shutdown.
Does anyone know of an electrical way to accomplish this? Perhaps a manual timer switch? It seems like a good idea to cool things off after stopping to help get the hot air out of the engine area. I would think this is a good source for cooking things like plug wires etc..

I just wanted to add to this thread by suggesting the following for your consideration.

Allow your engine to sit and idle after a run at all times for 2.5 to 3 minutes before shutdown. This alone will assure that your engine will cool down adequately so that you won't have to worry about any overheating or other conditions prior to shutting down the engine.

Do not pull into a rest stop after having cruised at highway speeds and simply shut the engine down so you can get up and take care of the things you need to do.

This procedure goes twice over for folks running diesels with turbos.

Since the coolant stops circulating the moment the engine is shutdown what good would continuing to run the fans do?? Cool the radiator??

Tom N...
My inital thought was that air would circulate through to the engine compartment and cool that. But after some more thought, I don't think the electric fans will produce enough air to accomplish this and would as you say only result in cooling the radiator. There would probably need to be some other ducted fans and there probably isn't room for that.

I do remember some automobiles have electric fans that continue running to cool the radiator and engine area but don't know how well this would work for the big 8.1 and engine area.

Driver's suggestion of continuing to run the engine for a cool off period probably makes the most sense.
