I think I need to replace my engine cooling fan clutch. This is on a 2003 Workhouse 8.1 w22. I normally do all my own work, but thought any tips from you guys might make this job easier. Is it done from the top or bottom? Where did you buy clutch? How much did it cost? Is any special tools required? Thanks for any info....Lloyd

Brazel's replaced mine a couple years ago. They removed it from the bottom. Yes, there is a special tool that you must get, or maybe it could be made. It resembles a thin wrench, off set and a certain size and thin enough to fit in between things. I can't remember for sure but it seemed like the price was in the $200 or so range.

Lloyd, I have had 2 FCs installed on my rig and they were done from under the rig. The FC is ~$100.00 or so and it takes about an hour to do.

Are you running hot? I thought mine was bad and the mech. at the dealership said it was. I changed out the thermostat and mine ran just fine after that....Just a thought..

FATMANAR, When the engine has a bad fan clutch the symptoms are that the fan does not clutch up and roar like is expected to pulling down the temps of the coolant. No amount of thermostats will make up for a bad fan clutch so I'm a bit skeptical about the DX from the shop "however" if it's working for you perhaps your fan clutch was never bad.

I have had new T-Stats installed a couple of times with nothing remarkable noticed in regard to the FC operation.

My fan would not clutch up either. The temp coming through the rad. did not get hot enough to set off the thermostat on the fan. Sorry, I was lucky and that's all it took. Also you can put a manual switch on your elec. fans so you can turn them on anytime you like. You can do a search here for the wire to tap into. I didn't trust the idiot gage and bought a Scan Gage II which gave me a digital readout on my temp. Good luck..

FATMANAR, I know that we have seen Max49 install a switch to turn on his auxilliary cooling fans however just give me a good working FCA and I'm a happy man! I run a Scan Gauge II and watch my FW°T like a hawk!
