I picked up my 2006 Winnebago Adventurer today from Redlands Truck with my new 8.1 engine. At 11,000 miles the old one gave up, so for the record I went through two cat converters and one engine in 11,000 miles.

Under warr. they gave me a new crated engine which is great, Redlands did an awsome job even cleaning the carpets when they were done. WH also paid for the cold air intake vents for the spark plug problem that goes with the Winnie coaches.

One thing that concerned me was Redlands said that the warr. only lasts as long as the first engine warr. which was over last month, so in essence I have no warr for the new motor. I'll call WH and double check that.

Other than that a happy camper (still a little gun shy though)

Mattpro, I expect that there is going to be some warranty coverage, just in case, but let us know when you find out.

What did Keith say that the forensics were on the original engine ?

DriVer,

They said that they didn't know, Somehow the oil was passing through the valves. WH had requested pictures of the valves ETC. I asked them what happens to the old motor and they said that sometimes WH wants it back and somtimes they don't.

I'll keep you posted on the warr. issue

What were the symptoms of the engine? Rod knocking, piston slap, bearing oil consumption and smoking? I hope this is very unusual but it would be interesting to know how the 8.1 acts when it is near its end.

There was no knocking or noise of any kind, It was consuming about three quarts of oil for every 100 miles. It was blowing oil out the exhaust pipe, and checking the dipstick the oil was black and had the odor of burning oil. All of this happened after the second cat converter went bad, lose of power etc. although the tech said it may not be connected, I don't have enough knowledge to dispute that.

OK, here is a question for Redlands that we all hope we never need. What would a ball park price be for a new engine and installed? I know there are a lot of other things involved that would move the cost up or down. Just wondering

$12,000 to $15,000, with only a couple of weeks left on my original motor that was one of my first questions.

Dead cats can wreck motors like this. Broken cat brick material (ceramic) can get back into the cylinders and destroy the bores. I've seen cat material all over inside an intake manifold after a cat failure. Sounds like what happened here.

My engine cost me just under $10k when it went bad (about 3 years ago and at 38K miles). I was told that my new engine had the 100K/5 year warranty. As a fine point, my engine was replaced by a GM dealer not a Workhorse dealer. This left me in an odd position when Redlands (Workhorse not GM) found a bad intake manifold gasket on the new engine. I ate the cost on that one.

My old engine make a godawful knocking noise when it went bad.

I am a service tech for medical devices. Sometimes thinks happen and I cannot repair an item. I have replace entire units under warranty sometimes even years after the actual warranty is expired. If I replace a unit free of charge, the customer does not get new equipment warranty. I will however give the customer the same 90 day warranty that he would get with all my repairs. I will explain to the customer that his warranty expired a while ago and that he is lucky to have equipment for us vs our competitors. I repaired his equipment free of charge by simply replacing the entire unit and that I only give him the regular warranty every other repair gets. So far ALL my customers have been happy with this. I have replaced equipment that was out of warranty for 5 years already however we state that the normal life of the equipment is 10 years. So it should not be dead after 5 years. Price of the equipment is anywhere from $5k to $40K. The stuff I am talking about is hygiene, disinfection and patient handling devices.

A suitable replacement engine is in development and aside from that I can't comment any further but you might want bo take a look at the link I provided that popped up on the Internet today.

Here is something that I expect is going to throw a wrench into the monkey works ....

Administration Releases New Fuel Efficiency Rules

Question of the day: How does an engine manufacturer, for instance let's say GM, make a engine that is going to be suitable for use in an RV and yet be able to make their numbers for EPA Standards for 2012 - 2016?

"The heads of the Transportation Department and the Environmental Protection Agency signed final rules setting fuel efficiency standards for model years 2012-2016, with a goal of achieving by 2016 the equivalent of 35.5 miles per gallon combined for cars and trucks, an increase of nearly 10 mpg over current standards set by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration."

In 2010 we see ... "All of this and even 26 mpg highway rating vs 24 mpg for Z06."

These are the rating for the 6.2L V-8 LS3 which we most likely will not get. This engine makes 436HP @ 5900 RPM and 428 lbs/ft of Torque at 4600 RPM." This motor is an SFI engine and not the Supercharger we've been talking about.

How many hands for the possibility that we are going to be seeing a diesel/electric hybrid or something along those lines.

The Chevy Volt is making its debut shortly! I don't want to speculate on how to electrify a horse!

I dont think the new 2012-16 EPA rules will effect RV's like you might think they will. The goal of 35.5 mpg is an average across all modals a manufacture will produce and the number of vehicles they produce. So if the Chevy Volt gets 65 mpg and a new Chevy truck get 20 mpg then they would take the average between the two and that has to equal 35.5. And this would be done using all modals and qty made put together by a manufacture. At least this was the way it was explained to me.

Large truck manufactures will have completely different set emission standards to follow. They have different standards as of today. When you smog your car or truck in California it is done on a chassis dyno. They test at two different speeds and the standard is quite high. With an RV they just look and make sure you have the emission control devices and then make sure the CO's are not over a specific number. As my smog guy said, unless an RV has been poorly maintained it will almost always pass.

Now I think you will see more (FREDS) diesels in front engine RV's. As the diesels have the torque and the HP to move a MH and even though the diesel emissions have become more strict, they dont have an EPA average MPG to maintain. Yet!

BTW has anyone ever seen a engine being replaced in a gas MH? I was shocked the first time I saw how they do it. This is why it costs so much.

Also my grandparents used to have a DP and they lost an engine in that. How they replaced that was to cut the lower back half off of the MH and then the CAT was slid right in. Almost 1/3 of the cost of replacement was do to body work and paint.

That is the case with most warranty replacements, if however you replace at your own cost after original warranty expires, you would get a new engine warranty of a certain number of miles and years.
