Cool Erratic Fuel Gauge

I recently purchased a 2003 TrailLite. It is built on a Workhorse P32 chassis. When I fill up, the amount never matches what you would expect from the gauge. To test I pumped the tank dry and added gas 5 gals at a time.

5 just moved the gauge off E 1/8 low
10 showed 1/8 an 1/8 low
15 showed 1/4 an 1/8 low
At this point I figure it is just reading 1/8 low, but the story continues.
20 showed 7/16 an 1/16 low
25 showed 3/4 an 1/8 high
30 showed F 3/16 high
35 showed 2 ticks over F 3/16 high
40 showed no movement

Has anyone out there seen this? Should I look at the gauge or the sender in the tank?

It sounds pretty normal. We had a P30 and it would go for quite a while before the needle would come off full.
Never let it go under 1/3 or so, otherwise the genset will not run.
Happy Glamping.

Thumbs up Thanks for the feedback.

I can live with burning 10 gals (1/4) tank before I come off of F. It is the outer end of the gauge that is driving me crazy. It just that I have a fear of running out gas.

Normally, when I hit 1/4 would I start of looking to refuel because I would suspect that I have 10 gals left. However, with the way the gauge is working, at 1/4 I still have over 15 gals (3/8 a tank). My fill ups are usually less than 25 gals.

If this is just how the gauge works, I guess I will have to live with it. I will have to suck it up and push on to closer to 1/8 on the gauge before I fill up. The way my gauge works, I will still have 10 gals (70 miles) left.
