My W24 with 8.1 engine at 6000 miles now has my exhaust pipes coated with heavy black soot. This is normally a sign of a rich fuel mixture. My dealer said the O2 sensors may be bad causing the rich mixture, but no "service engine" symbol was showing, so they have no basis to change them. My MPG average is 6.9 towing a Saturn.

Is this heavy black soot normal? Has anyone had the O2 sensors replaced and what was the result? </div></BLOCKQUOTE>

Workhorse response:

Our Solution :
The long tailpipe on the W24, allows the exhaust to cool before emitting into the air, thusly causing heavy soot to collect.

I've noticed that since getting the ultrapower upgrade I don't collect quite as much soot on the exhaust tips but still get some. It's easy to wipe off, I like to keep my polished stainless steel tips looking pretty, but it is a minor irratation. One piece of paper toweling and one trip around the rv once we get to where we are going keeps them looking shiny!

Had my RV in the Workhorse dealer while in Jacksonville Fl this past Wednesday for the gas clip recall.
Mentioned that my exhaust was black. They ordered a part and installed it the same day. It was two vents they installed in the grill and two flexiable hoses that ran in the dog house. This is to help remove the hot air off the exaust and wires. Mine had two burnt wires with 13K miles. My exaust on the right side cleared up quickly and the left is clearing but had an excess amount and is still burning away.

Ran good on way to Jacksonville but ran great on the way home. New wires were installed as two of mine were burnt due to heat. Workhorse covered this under warranty. They have no control on the body the RV manufacturer uses but did this as good will.

Mine black exaust was due to burnt wires. #4 and #7 I think. Anyway, thanks to Workhorse, my black exaust is a thing of the past.
