I have a P32 chassis and one of the exhaust pipes has almost no soot inside and one is fairly black. It runs just fine with no sign of one bank misfiring. I'm wondering if one cat converter is just doing a better job than the other. Just a curious question for one of you engine experts.

The catalytic converter removes NOx-based pollutants, not soot. Sounds to me as though one bank of cylinders is not getting the right air-fuel mixture. Wonder if the engine has separate oxygen sensors for each side and one os not working right?

What engine is in your P32? 454 or 8.1L? What year?

RV Roamer,
You may have the answer. Anyway, it's a 2004 8.1L with about 9000 miles. I'll bet there are two oxygen sensors, one just ahead of each cat converter. I'll crawl under and look. For reference, my 2003 Ford F150 with 37,000 miles has such a clean tailpipe that if you wipe the inside of it with your finger, you get a little white powder.

Both of my exhaust run black. Have had system checked several times. There are other owners with the same problem. Seams to be the nature of the beast.

My two exhaust pipes are also black. I have been told that this is quite normal.
