After all of the 8.1 hype I decided to get a scan gauge so I could more accurately know what was going on under the hood. The dash temperature gauge never moves from the center so I wanted a better indication. With the SG I was able to monitor the temp when the fan turned on and off as well as see the peaks going over the mountain passes. So far, so good.
They say a little knowledge can be a dangerous thing. Hopefully this will give me enough to avoid or limit any issues. We shall see.

I wish I had one when my fan shroud got ate by the fan. The MH ran hotter for the remainder of the trip and the clutch fan turned on later and stayed on longer. Also the tranny was dripping a little fluid from the pan when I got to my destination. It would be nice to know just how hot everything got. I would suggest keeping an eye on tranny temp too.

As we speak, I'm in the middle of my first trip with the Scan Gauge II.
One of my primary observations points was monitoring coolant temperature. The equilibrium point seems to be 198°F, raising to a max of 207°F on upgrades, not very steep but temps in the 90's.
Cooling fan comes on about 207°F, drops the temp back to about 200°F, and the temp then settles back to 198°F.
It'll be interesting to see the numbers going over Eisenhower Tunnel or Vail Pass.
Wayne
PS: As others have said, the needle doesn't move during the up's & down's, and never has.

Coming back from picking up mine in LA I could not believe the temp gauge staying steady coming up those hills in Colorado especially when the fans would kick in.
I'm not sure how really well I trust it.

IF ya'll are talking about the water temp "gauge" provided by Workhorse as part of their IP, you should know that the gauge is PROGRAMED to only point to the "normal" range. It is designed to move higher only in cases of extreme temps (above 240*F) , and anything higher than 240 "should" cause the needle to move off center and THAT is a warning to STOP and let things cool off before serious engine damage occurs.
So, JohnRR, you can "trust it" to almost always never move!

It's good to know about the 240 degrees. I do feel better knowing where in that range it actually is though. I am also running about 198 with the fan coming on at about 204. I saw briefly 213 but normally not above 207.
As for the tranny temp, I just programmed the x-gauge function to get the Allison transmission temp.

I just got my Scanguage from OEMy two weeks ago and used it on a short weekend trip. Thanks to OEMy for programming the additional commands.
Outside temp was about 86 degrees and ran some interstate and two-lane roads around Lancaster, PA.
Water temp ran around 197 and the highest I noted was about 202 on some small hills. I never heard the fan come on. Transmission ran no higher than 150. How are those numbers? Any other things I should be watching?

Those numbers seem to match up pretty closely to what I'm seeing. 150 on the transmission and 200 on the engine. Slightly higher when under extra work as in a hill. Overall I am very happy to have the gauge and added information it provides. Between that and my TST TPMS I feel I'm doing what I can to catch any issues that are "catchable".

While I have a DP with Cummins I use a VMSpc to monitor temps and other important info. Best to catch problems early if you can!

^^ The temperatures mentioned sound good.
The warmest temperatures we encountered was a trip from New Jersey to Tennessee in June of this year. We drove during the day when ambient temperatures were hovering in the mid to high 90's.
Engine temperatures ranged in the 197 to 207 mark. You could hear the clutch fan engage when over 204.
Transmission temperatures were in the 160 range with 168 being the highest when climbing I-24 west out of Chattanooga.
Intake air temperatures matched pretty much what the ambient temperatures when driving.
