Front wheel seals
I have a 2004 Dolphin on a W22 chassis and had the brake recall completed. Prior to having the recall done I was having problems with wheel seals leaking, most likely from overheating of the rotor/hub causing the seals to go bad. At the time it was misdiagnosed as bad seals.
We just returned home from a short trip and the left front wheel seal is leaking. We have only driven a few thousand miles since having the recall done so I’m wondering if anyone has any info on the recall not working.
I plan on calling the dealer today that performed the brake recall and talking with them but wanted to get the forums view also.

The wheel seal should not have a problem unless when they replaced the wheel bearing nut they might have gotten it to tight and the heat from being to tight over heats the hub oil and causing the seal to heat up and leak.

For years Bearings were hand packed with grease.
I had issues with seals too and had been doing everything by the book.
It gets tiresome back-tracking problems.
I am now back in the hand packed bearing camp with no issues since.
Fact is, the hubs run cooler according to my IR sensor.
If you are having issues with rear seals, check the vent on top of the axle housing and don't over fill the diff. Service people tend to fill to the bottom of the plug hole, which in most instances is too much fluid.

STEVE:
Front wheel seals can leak for any number of reasons, not just from heat, so not sure why you would suspect the recall "not working", unless you found the hub unusually hot (again).
Have you determined if the seal is leaking at the flange or from the rubber plug in the center???
It is possible that the LF hub was slightly over-filled, and that will cause excess oil to weep out around the rubber plug-making a huge mess. If the fluid is coming from the flange, fixing the leak is relatively easy and involves a through cleaning of the surfaces and application of a bead of "silicon" sealer. They stopped using the paper gasket years ago, I think.
please let us know your resolution of this issue.

What oil level are you seeing on the front two wheels?

The leak is from the flange not the rubber cover on the outside. I ckd the oil level recently and both sides were just below the level of the rubber cover. The reason I noticed the leak is when we arrived home O could smell burnt oil when I walked around the MH. I made the assumption there was a normal rubber seal between the hub and spindle. I guess I was wrong. Thank you for the information

I had a small leak on one of my front wheels. I just tightened the bolts a little and the leak went away.

Maybe I can be clearer on where the leak is. the oil is leaking down the rotor and dripping on the inside of the wheel and then running down the inside of the tire. I would think if the leak was coming from the hub cap, (where you ck the oil level) the entire inside of the wheel would be oily and not be on the rotors. Is that correct?

I would pull wheel and rotor off to inspect inner wheel seal. If seal appears ok I would check to see if your hub surface is warped.

Steve, I just went through the same thing in the middle of my three month trip. Smelled burnt oil after stopping and observed the oil leaking like you described. When I had it repaired they replaced my two piece seal with a one piece seal. When the mechanic installed the new seal he didn't remove the wear ring from the old seal. The wear ring slips over the spindle. Well, the wear ring ruined the new seal and I caught it before I left the shop. A new seal was installed but he didn't completely clean the rotor and there was residual oil on it. After a short test drive the rotor heating up and the oil started smelling. It also started dripping again. The shop installed a third seal and the owner, as well as myself, realized that the second seal wasn't leaking, but the residual oil on the rotor was thinning from heat and appeared as though the seal was leaking. The seal is no longer leaking but I still get an occasional smell of burnt oil under hard braking.
As Jon suggested, you need to remove the rotor again and see if there is any oil on the back plate.
