Length? And are you running w/a toad?

My '02 Itasca has blessed us w/ 7.3 MPG, pulling a Jeep Liberty 4 down, running at 62 MPH for 84,000 Miles.

As usual, YMMV.

Typically Yes there is. The W24 has a taller gear so it's going to use a bit more fuel. GCWR is 30K so you need more gear.

As regards the difference from 5 to 6 speeds the only difference is basically that 6th gear is .61 to 1 all else is basically the same. Getting a BIG motorhome to stay in 6th at times is challenging.

Every W-Series (except 16 & 18) from 2006 and up has 6 speeds.

Thank you for your service ... Thud Driver!

This is our high points - Damon OutLaw (10.5 foot tall front end and angled roof is a bit more aerodynamic than many) - W22 8.1L 6Spd.

On our trip last year from Dallas, TX to SoCal, we got over 10MPG on the flatland in West TX and NM - No Toad.

On our Spring Break trip -> CA to OR trip we measured an overall average mileage at just over 8 - with Toad.

-Not bad- I feel, thanks to the climb (North and Southbound) over the 4100 foot Tejon Pass and 4300 foot Siskiyou Pass, plus 20-40 mph headwinds back home through the California Central Valley. In between the problem areas, the instant mileage readout was 11-14MPG!

Keep a light foot and don't use the cruise control on hills...let the speed climb and fall like the Big Rigs.

Like was said before, find a CostCo near your stops for discounted fuel.

If my memory serves me correct, the rear end gearing was also changed when the 6-speed Allison started with the 2006 model year.

Allison 6-Speed gearing is 5.86 for 22.5 inch tires and 5.13 for 19.5" tires. I run a lean and mean 5.38.

We get the same mileage as Ed with our 2006 W22, 05 chassis, 5 speed. 6.5 to 7.5 with toad, 7 to 8 without. Don't have a heavy foot, 61 to 63 MPH. When we are out traveling mountain areas our mileage will be tainted thou.

I get 7.7 mpg average over the last 20k miles on my W20. Fast, Slow, Flat, hills and towing.

I subtract .69 gallons per hour of generator use. I know this is correct for my 5.5 Onan Marguis gold generator. One time I used the gen for 72 hours straight and then filled it up with 51 gallons. It took one gallon to get to and from gas station.

Thanks! I knew the rear end gearing was higher for the 6-speed, but couldn't remember the number.

lenjen,

You can contact the VP of Membership for the Workhorse Chassis Motorhome Club at lslaird1988@aol.com for more information about joining. It's a great club that has two rallies per year that are spread out over the country. The rallies have seminars presented by Workhorse service reps that are very informative and also give you someone to know in the service area.

The club website is WCMC website > Home .

Happy RVing,
Dave
