On occasion, someone who is not familiar with motorhomes will ask me what kind of gas mileage I get. They generally

blanch when I tell them I get about 8 miles per gallon. I always follow that up with an agreement that it's not very

good for a car, but it's great for a house.

Actually, when you consider all the facts, I get better perfomance with my MH than I do with my car. My ton and a

half car gets about 34 mpg on the highway. Under the same conditions my 12 ton MH and toad combination gets about 8

mpg. When you apply the math, the car gets 51 ton miles per gallon, and the MH pulling the toad gets 96 ton miles

per gallon. In other words, the MH is almost twice as efficient as the car in addition to having a built in toilet.

Think about this the next time you fill that big tank on the MH. Count your blessings.

Not to mention most full size gas pickups avg. no more than 13-15 MPG. Dang, even my toyota tacoma with a mild lift and 33" tires only gets 17 on the highway and that's only a V6!

Outstanding....and when we're stopped at the campground and set up for as long as we want to, and all of our amenities are at our fingertips, and we get to sleep in our own bed, and........etc. That portable house ain't burning no gas. What a life!

Last winter, I was gassing up at a station in Texas when a fella walks out the store after paying to gas up his Hummer. He looks admiringly at our coach and said "it's sure a pity you can't travel first class pardner". I smiled and said I just wish the rig got better mileage. He asked what I was averaging and I said between 7 & 8 pulling our toad. He laughed and said he was only getting 7 with the Hummer and does that make me feel any better? Maybe he was just pulling my leg about his mileage, but I DID feel better.

Lou,

I would have asked him if he can get something to eat, take a snooze or even take a whiz in Hummer... To me that is traveling first class.

OBTW - 7 mpg is about right for a Hummer.

I often get that "What kind of millage" question from folks who tow a trailer.. Well, 8 is my answer too, darn near exactly.

They make some comment about the cost of fuel and I point out that at the worst I drive this coach once a week, normally once every other week (once a week is to/from dump station if I'm boondocking and that's not far) when I park the MH I drop the towed.

I then ask them what kind of millage they get.. Well if you are pulling a 5'er of a size that competes with my Intruder (37') you can expect about..... 8 mpg

And when you drop the trailer if you are lucky around 16 (Which is kind of strange cause my brother gets 16 MPG empty on his rig... and his rig loaded tips the scales at 80 ton, so a full size SEMI TRACTOR with trailer gets the same MPG as a pick up. Something is wrong in pick up land) Well... My towed does over 20, and if I traded up I could easily break 30.

That's the ride I drive most every day, not the Class A
