Terry735001,
Prophetic. I just had the DTC light come on with a P0342 code. That's the low power malfunction for the CamShaft Position Sensor. I have a 2001 Newmar with the 8.1. I have been looking for better than a week for a suitable replacement but keep coming up with the "discontinued" comment and a shrug from all the parts folks I talked to. Is the 2003 backward compatible? I have also had to use a Silverado 2500 HD (8.1L) for reference as Workhorse (W22) always comes up "unavailable".

Your warning is 2 years 2 late Thankfully i managed to untangle the half of the belt that got all tangled up, got it to a repair shop and they did the job for only 1/2 hour labor (And felt bad about that no less, Good shop).

i am sorry guys i dont get updates when some one posts to some where i have posted

what i was talking about is they no longer make the cam censor for the 2002 8.1l and older any more .. they moved to a newer more used parts

if you happen to fond the older units in stock its around 400$ or more as they know your hurting for one

the update is a new or used timing chain cover
timing chain
censor
and plug on the end of the wire

i have a video showing where this unit is and how to do the wiring side
there are all so many posts on teh web with part numbers and where to find every thing you need and if your the type of guy that can do your own work can be done for well under the 400$ price tag of the .. your not going to find unit any more .... price

this has been done on many 512 mb ECMs for the 8.1l
it was all so all ready done on my 2002 8.1l runing intell i updated every thing to a 2004 setup

here i parts number for the tools and parts in this video

How difficult are the tensioner & idler pulley to change? Any pitfalls to watch out for?

I am sorry that I can't help you because my chassis is a W22. I had to remove the doghouse and thread the new belt around the fan blade from the top, everything was done from the bottom side. it was A simple job to do.
Good Luck
