I have a 1998 Brave on a GM p-30 chassis. I currently have a back up camera (installed by previous owner) that plugs into the cigarette lighter. I have obtained the proper wiring harness from the manufacturer to hard wire the system.

I have located the proper connection to the fuse panel (per Winnebago wiring diagram) for the hot lead, found an available ground lead.

I have removed the cover from the steering column and have access to the GM wiring bundle coming down the column. Can anyone tell me the wire color for the reverse circuit so that I can tap into that for proper operation of the back up camera?

Hope the above makes sense.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Tom:

Just a suggestion. Why not wire it to come on whenever you start up? I've found it useful to have the back up camera on whenever I am driving. I have it aimed so I can see to back up but also see what's behind me. Also allows you to keep an eye on whatever you are towing.

If you do this, no need to find the BU wire...just find something that's hot when you turn on the ignition.

Tom,

Not sure about the color but I beleive that the backup light switch is attached to the lower half of the steering column and the wires going to it should be quite visible. That is how it is on my 95 Vectra. The floor mats intefere with it sometimes when they bunch up.

Tom,

Neil is right - look for the brake light switch. It should be under the dash right behind the brake peddle. Tap into that to get your reverse signal.

Thanks for the responses. There certainly are a bunch of wires coming down the column. The Winnebago wiring diagram shows the GM wiring coming down the column, but doesn't give me the GM color coding for the wires. I'll keep trying to figure out exactly which one it is that I need.

I agree with having the camera on all the time while driving. I have seen too many people towing, that had rear tires blow on the toad and they didn't know it, because the camera was turned off. Some of these had worn the rim down to the lugs and broke the rear axle loose on the toad.

Between Christmas and New Years I blew a front tire on my Civic on I-95 headed to FL. I had the camera on and there is no way I could tell that a tire had blown in the monitor. A passing driver flagged me down and by then all that remained of the tire was 1" of rubber where the tire meets the rim. I remember a large pothole and straddled it with the coach. The passenger side of the toad must have hit the hole and dented the rim. The tire went flat and then disintergrated. I have the rim and could photograph it and post the photo if anyone is interested.

Thanks for the responses, we don't currently tow a vehicle as we are using it mostly for weekends, and longer trips are generally only a nite or two at a location. At this stage if we need a smaller vehicle for sight seeing we usually rent one. I would still like to wire it as designed to the reverse circuit (along with the hot for on/off switch), was just hoping someone might be able to supply the wire color I am looking for in the GM harness - just trying to save a lot of hunting and trial and error (mostly error for me, it's always the last item you check).

Tom,
Can you find where the GM harness connects to the Winnie wiring? Since you have the Winnie wiring diagram, maybe you can find the GM color at the GM/Winnie connection.

I was planning on getting at it later today, but the finish of the Master's promises to be pretty good too. Well, if the antenna still works maybe I can do both.
