I've been a little bummed out about the 8.1 being dropped by GM. While looking up another engine on Wikipedia, I ran into the GM V12. It's 2 each of the advanced 3.6L V6's mated together with a common crankshaft. Puts out some interesting HP and Torque.
Scroll down to the V12 section: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GM_High_Feature_engine
Anybody got the inside scoop when this might be available?

Either I am having another Senior moment or have been completely asleep at the switch. When did GM say they were doing away with the 8.1 and what are they replacing it with?

The rumor mill is grinding away constantly from the possibility of the Tonawanda plant being closed or refurbished to a 3rd party buying the rights to the engine for manufacture. There are quite a few manufacturers using the engine one being Merc Cruiser. They get the engine as a short block.
The Cadillac V12 was announced by GM on March 21, 2007. It was reported by AutoWeek that GM is planning to develop a 60-degree V12 based on this engine family to power the top version of Cadillac's upcoming flagship sedan. This engine would essentially consist of two 3.6 L High Feature V6s attached end-to-end on a single crankshaft, and would feature such high-end technologies as direct injection and cylinder deactivation. If so, the engine would displace 7.2 liters, and produce approximately 600 horsepower and 540 ft·lb of torque. Development of the engine is reportedly being conducted in Australia by Holden. (Wikapedia)
Would this engine ever see the light of day as a motorhome engine? Who knows!

Wouldn't that V12 be fun, and after Ultrapower?
Think I'd be inclined to trade it before it needed a valve job ($$$$$$$). But this geriatric would have some fun!

What happened to the Aluminum V-10 Chevy was working on? It was in a auto book I read in a doctors office some time ago.

I think the 8.1 was their final answer to the V10 "fad" as I remember it being interpreted back then.

Read about the V-10 long after the Vortec 8.1 came out.

according to this article, http://www.gmhightechperformance.com/tech/0512htp_gm_st...0_history/index.html ,
GM was experimenting with an iron V10, as in trucks and RVs, in '94-'95 which was well before the time that the 8.1 arrived. Looks like they are experimenting with an aluminum version in the current era for use in the 'Vette. They say that the small block based V10 is about one inch longer overall than the big block V8. Not in the article, but this presumably, is 25% longer than a small block V8. That small difference might be keeping it an experiment for GM it seems.
