I see that as needless "abuse" of engine and transmission to save some brake pads. Why did he wait for the upshift before applying the brakes? IMHO stupid

mfire1339 if you had ever had your brakes fade and degrade severely you would see the value of this. You are not saving your brakes you are possibly saving your a_ _. I had this happen to me way back with a Winnebago and was very fortunate to come up on a pull off. I had to cross traffic and was with in 75' of losing it. I though I was going to brake the steering wheel as I pushed on the brake with both feet so hard. When I finally stopped and got out all four brakes were smoking, I had the fire extinguisher in hand just in case. This was a Doge chassis. Once your speed is up you CAN'T go to lower gears and you are in trouble. I think this is a must read for every motor home driver that goes out on the road with his family.

Mike if you don't know what gear to start your descend in I guess you go lower and if you reach max RPN and are less than safe speed you could then select a higher gear? You can always do that but not select lower once your speed is too high.

Pete, I have an aftermarket " Grade Brake" and it works wonderfully! I find myself having automated the entire process and compression braking is as natural to me now as stepping on the gas is.
Truely an amazing gizmo!

If you don't have the Grade Brake do you agree with my statement?

Pete, ..... You got the idea .... Start in the LOWEST gear possible and then uplift if your motorhome is dragging on the way down. I would go to 1st IF I had to descend a grade just like in downtown Branson but 2nd is a good starting point on a severe grade. "Normally" an initial shift to 3rd can handle the majority of grade braking. Select shifting as this is called is not unique to Workhorse owners but was taught at Camp Freightliner where it is recommended that a lower gear be selected via the shift pad from the onset of the descent.
