HAD IT with the heat!!

the heat from ALL around my engine area kept even BOTH roof air and dash air from effectively cooling my rig...... and the MH could always be quieter,eh?

if it was 100deg outside the best i could get was 80 in the MH....i had to drive in shorts only with AC blowing right on me .......white towels on the dashboard helps tho!

the whole situation was BORDERLINE doable!!...and all this is suppose to be FUN, huh?

this was with both ACs working GREAT both with 25deg deltas

so i cut the padded dash down the middle and removed it and insulated EVERYTHING under there including the HVAC plenum with multiple layers of 3/4" foil covered urethane insulation board......glued on with Locktite brand premium liquid nails[i got the BIG caulk gun n the BIG tubes----DO NOT USE water based liquid nails---read the clean up instructions if it says water clean up, its socialist junk----oh and if its WHITE u got the wrong stuff]

there were only a few screws holding dash in, tho they were hard to get to, but possible.......a 1 1/2" flat aluminum strip i got a home depot n painted black covers the seam cut.......but my dash was just vinyl covered foam on plywood.....but theres a metal sub dash 6" beneath it that was getting 115degrees......

i even put loose insulation in zip locks and packed them behind gauge console and foamed them in with canned foam insulation......did the same thing around the 'bubble' black plastic HVAC box thats to the left on the firewall when u stick ur head in the front engine hood----packed it all the way to the front of the bus [4-5"]

then i did the multi-layered foam board thing under the doghouse hatch and EVERYWHERE around engine and even in the wheel wells close to engine [there was 12" on drivers side and 6" on passenger side floor that was getting HOT [110deg] from engine exhaust headers.]

also i added 1" sound insulation on the heat insulation.....sound insulation is sponge rubber with heavy core in it that absorbs sound..... Merritt Marine Supply has it at 1/3rd the price as others on ebay.....they google up.

all this insulation under floors and in engine doghouse i also screwed or bolted in [long 1/8" bolts........BIG washers]........do not over tighten bolts!

what i have described is over a hundred hours of tedious work.

but now its MUCH quieter and MUCH cooler in the MH in the summer heat.

i also put a relay and a switch to the electric fan on the front of the radiator/AC condensor......i run it for 30-45 minutes after i stop in the summer to remove heat from engine area.

either u should make a provision to charge engine battery or you must power the fans with house battery which is what i did.....i used a relay for when the fan is activated during driving with AC on, using the old power wire to fire the relay connecting house battery power to the fan [i added an additional fan also, slid factory fan over]........since when driving, house batteries are getting charged by alternator.

Anywhere close to the engine i used multiple foam heat board layers to get 3-6".....whatever fit. .....i tallied 113 pieces of measured n cut foam board, many of them different sizes n rarely SQUARE at all.

a WHOLE lot of work but the difference is ASTOUNDING.........MUCH cooler MUCH quieter!

thanks!

i forgot to add that this was totally an engine heat issue.......the roof AC would easily cool the rig in the summer AFTER the engine heat from the days running dissipated.
