Harmonic Balancer

Has anyone ever heard of a squeak coming from the Harmonic Balancer?

I developed a squeak and thought it was coming from the fan belt but after having it checked they said it was coming from the idler pully. I had the idler pully replaced but the squeak was still there.

The belt is new, the idler pully is new, and the squeak has changed to an intermittent squeak only at certain RPM's

The squeak is not coming from the A/C or the alternator.

Now they say it is coming from the Harmonic Balancer

Thanks,

Ron

Harmonic balancers have been known to slip, thus throwing the ignition timing mark out of it's correct relationship with the crankshaft position.Your observation that the squeak is heard only at specific RPMs seems to confirm the diagnosis of the balancer at fault since the harmonics that the balancer is to absorb are not a constant throughout the RPM range of the engine.

Throw a cup of water on the belt with the engine running and see if the noise changes that means it is the belt if it changes

I would look in the area of the belt tensioner it moves a lot and if the bushing in it wears it will get out of line. I have replace many of these for that same reason.

My mistake, belt tensioner pully instead of idler pulley was changed
