Help Please - Coolant Leak
I have a 2003 Holiday Rambler that has a 8.1L Workhorse Engine that was replaced at 20K miles before I owned it. I have been having P0151 codes and smelling coolant when the engine is running. I crawled under and saw coolant leaking on the driver's side exhaust. I am thinking that it has a blown head gasket. I have checked the temperature sensor and engine block plugs and all are tight, other ideas, things to check would be much appreciated.

The 8.1 workhorse was/is a great engine. Its demise was a great loss to the RV industry. I find it hard to believe that you got two bad ones. Are you sure the coolant is coming from the head. Pull the dog house off and get a better look. A leaking hose is much more likely than a blown head gasket, at 3k miles on a new crate motor. OR was the old engine rebuilt? In that case the head bolts should have been re torqued by now.

I suppose it only leaks when pressurized? If so, here's what I'd try: clean the engine well using a pressure washer and something like Simple Green, then pressurize the cold system with a cooling system pressure tester. Now you can crawl around and find the leak, without burning yourself or losing body parts to a whirling fan belt and fan. Or you can prove to yourself that it only leaks when warm and pressurized, not just pressurized. I'm thinking head gasket too, but I'd want to eliminate everything else before I remove the head. How about the water neck, where the upper radiator hose connects to the engine? Those are pretty flaky too.

I think there is a sensor in that location that is prone to leak if not tightened properly.

Check the freeze plug located right above the manifold. It can be tightened with a 3/8” drive ratchet.

Welcome to irv2, kcjac
A link to help you get around irv2. ------ OEMY's site
Two things I found on my Workhorse Newmar coach, when the Evans AC/Heater was in stalled the two hot water hoses from engine had splicing nipples connected over the top left of engine, the spring clamps lost their tension and I installed four new screw type steel clamps in their place stopped slow drip I had for couple years with fluid loss and constant refilling of coolant tank.
Second problem had to replace rusted out oil dipstick tube, had to remove stud for manifold, when stud removed anti freeze came shooting out of hole for stud, replaced bolt with non-locking thread paint when replacing tube mounting bracket.

For the P0151 code...clean your MAF sensor.
That's what fixed my P0151 and P0152 code. Do not replace the O2 sensor until you have cleaned the MAF.

Replace your radiator cap. It may be leaking and the drips fall on the floor in strange places. Mine was falling near the left front wheel. I had replaced it with an exact replacement part. Still leaked. Took it to a mechanic who put on a 14 lb cap with lever and it stopped leaking. The spec is for a 13 lb cap, but this one works. At least it wasn't a head gasket!
