HOT SOLENOID DEBATE and one other question...

The shift interlock solenoid at the base of my steering column can sometimes get so hot you can not touch it. This seems to happen when the coach is in park WITH engine running and I have read members saying it is normal, no consequence...
This does not sit well with me and wondering if anyone else has the low down on this issue.
I have to say, my shift can be moved out of park without stepping on brake contrary to it's design and has been this way for years. Perhaps someone reversed the connector that plugs into the solenoid..? Could the connector not be polarized to prevent this?

Also, anyone know what that blue plastic pin is on some p32 ignition switches? Looks like a safety pin to prevent inner slide from moving?

Thanks!

Joe

hot solenoid

This problem is YEARS old. We've heard about it many times when folks have mistakenly associated it with AutoPark issues. One of those things that sounds like the part/application is marginal - - but they seem to last quite a long time.

Yes, I came across this being mentioned along time ago but just never felt right about any electrical part getting too hot to touch unless specifically designed or built with "heat sinking" fins.
BIG KUDOS TO YOU, because I purchased a set of auto park sensor switches maybe two years ago and low & behold the advice paid off! Recently, we headed out for a week long road trip and about 10 miles from home I noticed the APB dash light was on. I pulled over but nothing was evident so reluctantly & upset, we drove back home where I got beneath the chassis and there it was, fluid leaking from beneath the metal shield, and to my delight right beneath where the gray switch was!!
In about an hour I swapped the switch and salvaged our week long vacation, was a hero with the wifey too!!
On our return is when the second overheated ignition switch became evident in the form of melting wire connector which I fixed in nick of time as well!

You rock Bear!!!

If the pin you're talking about is in a new switch , then it is to hold the inner slide in the , ignition lock position , while the activation rod is attached and the new switch is attached to the column. It's then removed and wiring harness attached. Some switches for your application will have a bent bar to lock the slide and prevent installing the wiring until the bar is removed.
