How do i determine which workhorse chassis i have

I have a 2003 Holiday Rambler Vacationer 34' w/the Chevy 8.1L engine. Yes, we recently bought this MH. I just read something new to me elsewhere that there are 2 different Workhorse chassis. And naturally, there is one that's better than the other.

How do I tell or learn which chassis I have on this Vacationer? Also, what is the difference between the 2 chassis'?

I really do look forward to reading your advice and comments!

If you look at your VIN# the sixth digit will determine which you have. If it's an "A" it will be the W24 chassis. If it's the number "6" it's a W22 chassis.

In short the W22 is the lighter chassis the W24 the heavier in regards to carrying capacity. The W22 had a recall on the brakes which if this is the chassis you have you should check to make sure that has been addressed.

If you go to the Workhorse site here on irv2 there is plenty of information you can gain about your chassis. Good luck and enjoy your coach. We have the W22 under our unit and we have really no complaints at all.

A 2003 MH with WCC chassis can have either a P32 model chassis OR a W-22 series chassis. The W-24 series chassis was not yet available. The P32 is designated by either a "3" or a "5" in the sixth position of the vin # and the W-22 series is designated by a "6". Both models came in multiple GVWR ratings, but that is not indicated in the vin number, you have to see the data plate (label) or check the build sheet. The model YEAR is the number in the tenth position of the vin.

The primary difference in same model year P32 vs. W series are the IFS on the P32 vs. the solid front axle on the W, and the P will have a GM 4 speed, while the W has an Allison 5 speed. Both were available with 19.5" wheels, but the W could have 22.5" wheels

Good morning George,

Above information good but incomplete. In 2003 there were at least 4 Workhorse RV chassis. P32, W20, W22, W24. If the front springs are coils it is a P32. If the front springs are leaf it is one of the others. The P32 has a GM transmission, all the W series have an Allison transmission. The information in the following links will help you determine your chassis.

2002 Workhorse W20/W22 RV chassis

The first link has a chart to help you decipher the VIN number.

Sorry yeloduster, but the W-24 chassis did not exist until the 2004 model year, and they added the W-25.5 to the W24 series in the 2005 model year.

And, just FYI, the W-22 series includes the W-20, W-21, and the W-22. Also, the code in the sixth position of the vin only identifies what "series" a chassis is and does NOT identify which GVWR rating was built.

Ed pretty much nails it all the way. One other thing to add, if the 6th position in the VIN indicates its a W22 chassis that does not necessarily mean its rated at 22000 GVWR. The build sheet will indicate if your W22 is rated at 22000 or 20700 GVWR. Typically but maybe not in every instance a chassis with a 22000 GVWR will have 22.5 wheels and a chassis with a 20700 GVWR will have 19.5 wheels.

Ed can get you a build sheet for your chassis. Send him a pm or email.
