A tech can charge it by reading the pressures. Also, before you recharge it, you need to do a leak check, repair the leak and then evacuate the system to get the moisture and air out of the system.

Don't have a leak, I have a compressor that was making nasty grinding noises. Thus, I will repalce the compresor and drier but need to know how much 134 the system holds. That is why I asked for someone with a simular W-22. Thanks Marv

You still need to pressure test and evacuate the system since it has been open. The oil used in R134a systems is very hygroscopic and soaks up moisture like a sponge. The moisture in the system is very detrimental by forming acids. Moisture can also freeze in the expansion valve and cause operational problems. Unless you have access to a vacuum pump, I would recommend having a technician do the job.

I have been in the A/C and refrigeration business for 40 years and I do not do some of the work my self due to the lack of proper tools.

Step one, rent a vacuum pump and draw a vacuum on the system for 30 minutes. That draws out most of the moisture.

Close the valves on the gauges and make sure it holds full vacuum for 15 minutes.

Charge to ambient temp plus 125 PSI on the high pressure side, 35-40 PSI on the low side at idle. You should then see about 40-45* as measured at the vents on high.

I don't know the actual weight fr your rig but I'll estimate three to four pounds.

You did replace the oil lost from the compressor and drier, right? Also did you flush the metal out of the system?

Thanks for the difinitive response. I haven't removed the compressor yet. Another week until I'm at a cg where I can work on it. Marv
